Please help me choose!

Hi,

I have narrowed my choice down to two models. But, they are totally different animals.
1. Corvette $$ NT (natural Ash)
Very light and well balanced, sounds killer!
2. Warwick Alien
Best ABG I have ever played. I've always wanted one, too.

I went in the store to choose between a Thumb BO 4 and a Corvette $$ NT4. The $$ NT fit my style a little better. Then I saw an Alien and 1 hour later my wife had to pry it from hands and drag me out of the store. I mainly play jazz and original stuff, so please help me make a decision.
My wife said get both, but I'm not sure I can afford it.

Your wife said "get both" and you're still debating?
I think it's settled...

Get both!

They are completely different animals, that you already said, so it's not a matter of which is better for your style of music, it's a matter of finding a use for both in your music! :)
 
Grab the one least likely to be back in the store soon. You can always get the other later.

I already have a MIA Jazz and a Highway 1 fretless, so I just want a change. I now live in Shanghai and make my living playing and teaching, so I guess I can justify the cost.
I just saw Jonas play here last week and it was inspiring. I guess that is the reason for the ABG gas. I know the Alien isn't made in Germany, but the quality seemed pretty good to me. The E was a little loud, but that can be fixed fairly easily. And the $$ NT had a wide variety of tonal possibilities.

But, if you had to choose just one . . .???? what are your thoughts?
 
well, if I HAVE to choose..... I would go with the Corvette NT.

If I want to do an acoustic set, I just play my upright. :lol:

This is such a personal question. It really depends on what kind of music YOU want to play. From there you should be able to pick. If this is just another edition to your bass arsenal, flip a coin and get one then a few months down the road, get the other one!
 
You KNOW you'll end up getting both! Just do it now and put yourself out of the pain.

Have you thought about a Jonas Signature bass?

Only problem with the Hellborg signature is that it costs 4-5 times as much as the alien!
 
The Jonas signature is a little out of my price range and I would have to special order. But his did sound very nice. It was very light weight with a very low action.

Oh, I almost forgot. I use DR Hi Beams (40- 100)
Too heavy for the Alien?

I'd say no, especially since it's a 32" scale, so it,s gonna feel a little lighter than what you're used to ...
 
I'd say go for the $$ NT, not that it's going to surprise anyone considering my Warwicks. :D

And not to add confusion to your decision, but if you haven't already I'd strongly suggest trying the bubinga $$ NT also. I really liked the ash version as well (very clean sound), but I thought the bubinga body gave the bass way more character tonally (a bit more bite). Just an opinion. I'm sure you'll enjoy any of them...
 
Keep your wifes idenity hidden. She may get stolen by some of the members of this forum with an answer like that!

Looks like the Corvette $$ would be most everyone's choice. They do have one with a bubinga body and also a really nice Thumb NT that is light weight and well balanced.

Actually, I do quite a bit of soloing, mostly finger style, tapping, a little slapping, you know . . .
So, I need a really nice low action setup. i'm just tired of the rear pickup Jbass type of sound, i want a more original voice. i liked the Corvette $$ and the thumb neck through, but didn't really care for the Dirty Blonde or FNA Jazzman type of sound. To me, the corvette$$ and thumb NT were meatier or something. I know this is probably apples and oranges, but i know you guys really know the basses much better than me.
What are your opinions?

If you are looking for an original voice, the Thumb NT is the way to go IMHO. Also, the 5 string has a very unique voice due to the pickup placement. Definitely check one out before you make your decision and good luck.

P.S. - I must echo the sentiments about your wife. Any woman that tells you to buy both basses if you are having trouble making up your mind is a definite keeper. :)

ok... light weight bubinga body bass? Very strange.... Anyway, if you're looking for something sounding different, the thumb is the way to go, very very unique sound.
