I was wandering... How many of you, when impaired play worse than when sober?

Attribute it to the dirty rocker in me, but I recorded myself last night when drunk, and messed up on my script, and listened to it tonight, sober, and realized I play just a tad bit better when impaired!

I actually ended up 'feeling the same as last night' and am realizing I sound better when playing impaired.

How do the rest of you feel on the subject!?

I guess that a mild euphoric state might lower inhibitions and let you go with the flow of the music more easily...

Personally I don't play better sober or drunk, I suck in any state of mind... :P

i struggle even under the influence of gurana energy drinks haha

I tried playing drunk once and I find that I play worse under the influence...

i think it depends on how much i've had. I used to like to have a few beers/shots or have a smoke before a show, but for the last two years I've been totally sober while playing. I still have a couple beers now and again, but I can't play drunk. it's horrible.

A bit of smoke never hurts me either, but too much and I space out and forget where I am (in the song and in life).

Everything in moderation kids....

Well... let's see... I took an oxycodon (prescribed 7.5) and drank half a bottle of Maker's Mark... I'm a chain smoker, so let's say about 8 cigarettes, and I honestly feel more, loose, more in tune with my bass than when sober.

Again, attribute it to the dirty rocker in me, but DAMN!

Worked on this very logo a few nights ago for my future endeavor... (When I return home to Florida.)

[PS... I beg of no one to steal this logo, I post it in good trust, not to mention the font "Draft Beer" is not free! Thank you.]

i don't want to smoke, im gonna try as hard as i can to stay away from it, and im most likely gonna be allergic to alcohol anyways, because my dad is, not necessarily a bad thing

For me sober is the best way. Being on stage is crazy enough, and I am crazy enough, not to need other chemicals.
Even sober, from time to time, my guitarist looks at me with the "chill, man!!!!" face.

Ok, from time to time, I can take a shot of tequila before a club gig... But it happens really like twice from about 150 gigs. year.

Music is a beautiful job, but not an easy one. I don't sleep enough, I stay in the car too much. And the professional illness are back and liver diseases :-) The drugs and alcohol comes with the territory if you are not aware...
If I start drinking at shows, then I'll drink at the hotel too, then in the bus too, why not...
This is not a life for me, I want to live nice and healthy, to take care of my family.
And very important... on the stage you have a very big responsibility! You are a hot shot! the kids are looking at you, and they want to be like you! If they see a drinking rock and roll guy, they will want to be look like you! I really don't want to send a bad message with my attitude on stage... I always think about my son Luca when I am on stage.

Definitely worse after having a few drinks! My band played a gig in London many moons ago - we were headlining and there were 5 other bands before us. We got there at 5.00 to soundcheck and then drank from 6.00 onwards...we thought we played great but on hearing it afterwards - what a sack of plop!!

Kyle - don't smoke...it ain't big and it certainly ain't clever.

If you play better "after a few cocktails"... put the glass down and start practicing.

Ditch the crutch, go on stage sober, party when the job is done.

Playing drunk is bad, but there's a huuge difference from one beer to drunk. If you think you're not full till it's coming out again, you're fucked :)

Drugs are bad, stay away from those. Fun in the start, kills you within few years.

My experience is that while drunk, you think you ar eplaying really great, but in actual fact you are playing terribly!

You make me curious to know: By what parameters are you
judging your playing as better and worse ?

The question arises cuz the basics, such as timing and intonation
will be worse. So you are putting something else above basics
as a priority for judging your playing.

It then follows that if you have perhaps perfect pitch or something
even close to that, and have your timing so deeply ingrained in
your being that these two things are virtually immune to the stage
of intaxication that allows you to still walk, talk, drive [in an empty
giant parking lot] etc etc .... if the basics are that solidly a part of
you [which IS possible] then a certain level of intoxication that
isn't severe enuf to put much of a dent in the basics could possibly
free up your creative side.

So while a great majority of bassers play worse when intoxicated,
there is a plausible scenario where playing may actually improve.
If your basics are sooper tight, really part of your essential being,
such that basics suffer only maybe 5% from some drinking that
frees your wild side, you natural or creative side to a much greater
degree, then it seems that would be a net gain and you'd sound
noticeably better, more alive, more entertaining, etc.

I'd go with sober.

I've had occasions where I've played better and been in the groove when I've had a few.
But contradicting that, I've had times where I had no coordination at all when trying to play.

Also you may think you are playing amazingly but that may be the alcohol telling you that!

There are a number of replies so far that bring up what is
quoted above .... but this ignores the fact that Tyler made
a recording, which he later listened to while sober. So I'm
really hoping Tyler will tell us more about what he means,
what he listens to hear, how he decides what's better.

Hint, hint .........

I think it's best if one has prepared very, very well for one's show and
has had a good night's sleep. Now, if a situation like a live show makes
you very anxious, this can affect your playing severely. Having a small
amount of alcohol may loosen you up so that you let go and just play
without thinking or worrying too much. But you have to be prepared, you
can't let go otherwise. I think the last thing a performer has to do when
playing is think too much, he/she only has to perform. All the thinking
and programming should have been done while preparing for the gig.
Substances are a bit tricky, different people are affected in different ways
by the kind and amount of a substance. Even the same person that can
tolerate a couple of drinks may find him/herself overwhelmed by them on
a day without enough rest/sleep for example.
