Passive RB streamer->Active?

hello! i have a limited understanding converting passive pickups to active....however i want to know very specifically as far as the passive MEC soapbars in a early rockbass streamer go, what are my options?

can they be made active?

could i simply use the preamp from another bass that has passive pickups and an active eq?
money is a huge factor(i'm poor).

and i do not want to change pickups because of they're uncommon size and fit i've already ruled this out

i'm not looking for the most tip top, amazing, ground breaking tone, as i am quite satisfied with how she sounds.

i simply would like a little more brightness and the convenience of it being onboard ( when i play live shows i don't want to mess with settings )

any advice or knowledge you can shed on this is appreciated.

It is not possible to make passive pickups active, but as you say you can fit an active preamp.
I'm sure someone fitted a Bartolini preamp to a streamer standard,which i believe has similar pickups to yours,recently and covered the installation on the forum so a search is needed.
I would recommend you take a look at the EMG,bartolini,aguilar and deymour duncan web sites to get an idea of how pre amps are fitted,it is not too difficult.

"I am too poor to buy cheap things"

It means sometimes buying a better and more expensive instrument can save your money on long term.

You have a nice bass. It is not bad at all, but it has a softer, rounder sound than th rest of the W family. Changing the pickups will not change this too much, you will only spend money that will not come back to you.

In my humble opinion, you have two possibilities - enjoy this nice instrument, or sell it and buy a new one with J J pickups that will give you a faster response.

My 2 cents.
 
^^^ i know and agree whole heartedly with what your saying. however, when i used my friends sansamp di preamp thingy, i really liked how it enhanced it. i didn't really have to crank any of the settings. i would even get that pedal, but i would really like the convenience of it being right there on the bass so i dont have to make adjustments on my amp or on a floor pedal you know?
 
I think you should just trade it in with the RB Corvette. The Vette has active pickups and probably the sound you're looking for. :d
 
The RB Vette does sound awesome, I got one off Ebay for 280 bucks, hardly used, had the original strings and they still sounded good, seller included the gig bag from a bubinga Vette, so the premium. I had the intention of making a new body for it (kind of an RB Buzzard) but liked the Vette too much to mess around with it. Mine's an older one with the one-piece bridge, but it's a great bass.
