Nut broken

Hi guys,


i just wanted to comfort my vette a bit with a new set of strings, waxing and oiling when this happened:

I took the old strings off and this little thing, which holds the just-a-nut went off, in two pieces.

I guess it is still playable due to the pressure of the strings, though...

Still, do you think I should get it fixed? And how could this have happened anyways?

Hello there, If I were you I would buy a new one, with that lower piece broken the stability of the nut may be compromised. It´s a cheap replacement, anyway.

I've never seen a JAN3 base break like that before. It almost looks as if it was pried on judging by the cracks in the center and the almost "melted" looking middle spot.

Superglue would fix that.

JAN-III's aren't very expensive. $50 USD on ebay.

I never use Hercules stands because they put unnecessary pressure on the nut sometimes. That could be the cause of your break.

Hi STR,

I agree, I don't think you need a replacement. Just unglue both parts, glue them together, and then glue the whole piece to the bass again

Agreed. I don't think a new nut is necessary. A cheap and simple fix. When you have a look at the points at which the nut rests via the height adjusting grub screws and consider that the nut will be also riding up and down on the two posts it will be quite stable.
