LEDs look great, and I'm sure he's a lovely guy, but that 'solo' just sounded like non-musical twiddling wankery to me.

Hey, I resemble that remark!!!! I do have to agree with Luke. I'm all for showing off chops and the like but it should fit into the context of a song or else it just doesn't make any sense. Granted, he sounds better not making sense then I do trying to make sense lol
 
Looks sick, his abilities are undeniable, but I would have ducked out to the bar during that.

Doing a bass solo to a really large crowd is different than in a club situation. If you try to do subtle, musical things, you will loose the audience in no time :-)
 
He did that to allow people to go to the bar and grab some beer, like Augie said. 8:
 
I hear what you're saying Flo, but I didn't say he had to be subtle. He could have still been musical and stayed loud and flashy.

... but like the guys said, he probably played like this so people could go to the bar and get a drink.

I will add that maybe I'm just a cranky old guy... his audience did seem to like it.

So gents, while @ this topic: WHAT defines a good bass solo?
Think carefully before you answer.

That piece from Mr Wooten is great. Starts off as a bit of a technique-fest but boy; I agree with Clanley and Hardy... @ 1:01 it develops into something killer.

What defines a good solo?

I would say it should:

Be in a style appropriate to the genre of music being played and be complimentary to the piece; it should sound musical and have some interesting musical ideas that relate to the piece being played. Engage the audience and keep them interested. Allow the soloist to express themselves and use a range of techniques across the full range of the instrument. Provide some continuity of ideas throughout the solo, but also be dynamic.

They're just some ideas of what I would think a good solo should be. Not that I'm right or wrong; just some ideas. I think Mr Entwistle and Mr Wooten above both nailed it.

Having been to a few 311 concerts, nobody leaves during the P-Nut solo.

I was personally at this show.
