Hi Warickers,
I'm a newbie both on this forum and to Warwick basses. I just purchased a 1998 Thumb B/O 6 (still in the mail) and wanted to know whether 1998 qualifies as "vintage". Also, any advice you can give me about the bass would be very much appreciated. (Yes, I will keep it oiled.)

FWI, I currently play R&B, latin, jazz, funk, & folk (not at the same time) on:

Alembic Essence 5 (fretted)
Moses Graphite custom fretless jazz
& soon, Warwick Th B/O6 (fretted)!!!

I guess if your 1998 Thumb is a vintage, my 1994 'vette Proline must be!?

Don't know if your bass is vintage, but the Thumb BO is a great bass anyway!
 
Hmmm, ok, perhaps I should have posted in the main section of the forum rather than the Vintage section, but thank you both nonetheless, and it's great to meet you. I'm really looking forward to rippin' it up on the Thumb.

Both your basses are better than vintage,they're Warwicks. :wink:
 
OK... so I've given this vintage thing some thought and come up with the following requirements:

- the bass must be good... and must be desirable... that's a bit of a "given" in this case!

- could be discontinued (like the Fortress), or:

- specs have changed - eg. wenge necks, one piece bridge, early Thumb NTs with 2 band eq (is that right), or:

- discontinued, and then re-continued - I'm sure someone said they had an early version of the Jack Bruce Signature Thumb - all Warwicks have their date of birth as part of the serial number.

- Warwick get taken over by CBS (erm... that's a joke).

By my reckoning, maybe all our basses will become "vintage" when the JAN3 is introduced (no... just another joke)

I think the vintage tag is only an issue when it comes to resale value... and no-one else is getting their sweaty hands on mine!
 
Like Thumperton says, if it has the "W" on the headstock, it might just feel & sound priceless to you! IMO any Warwick is a desireable axe.

Thank you all for your warm welcome. So I guess my Thumb isn't vintage - well, it's much more important to me that it play and sound well. And from that vantage, I seem to have purchased a winner. Cool.

One unusual feature of my bass is that it came equipped with Seymour Duncan Bassline soapbars, whereas most Warwicks, I gather, come with MECs, EMGs, or Barts. Since my bass is still in the mail, I can't comment on the sound.

Thumb BO's 6ers have MEC soapbars as standard but Basslines are an option.I noticed you have an Alembic Essence 5,I had a Europa 5 till recently.Awesome basses eh.

Yes, I love the Essence. Great pickups on the Alembic -- gets the Stanley Clark sound. I'm really looking forward to A/B'ing the Thumb and Essence using the same preamp, amp, and cabinet.
