Just a little background info first....

I've been traveling throughout Asia for about the last 14 years and I relate to it's culture probably more than my own (white-boy American). I really enjoy it's art's, the people, the food.... everything really.

Anyhow, I've been reading a lot of Haiku lately and I really enjoy how simple yet complex they are, so much can be said in so few words. After taking a stab at my own Haiku writing, I wanted to take it a step further and create something truly unique. Thus, the creation of musical Haiku... short musical pieces that relate to the spoken word. So far I have written 28 haiku and have recorded 8. My plan is to write music for 50 haiku and see where it goes from there. The pieces are so short that one would think it's a matter of minutes to put music to word but I've discovered that just as every word of a haiku has a place and impact, so does the music.

All pieces are played using my fretless Vette, recorded into Garageband, using a PreSonus USB audiobox, a Shure SM86 for vocals, and Line 6 gearbox for speaker and effect mods.

I've also been a photographer for the last 15 years and recently started a new project called "head in the clouds", which I plan to turn into a book and publish during 2010.

Please have a look and listen and let me know what you guys think. All feedback is welcomed (good or bad). Most of friends have a good laugh at the Haiku and tell me it's a waste of time, hopefully you guys are little more accepting of the arts. Thanks in advance for taking the time.

The link is in my signature block.

Interesting, I feel there's something wrong with the way you speak the words. It's too serious I think, although I can't
imagine a different way. Here's a funny haiku, not mine:

Climbing Mt. Fuji
Cherry blossoms in the wind
I see a Coke stand.

(for white boy americans ;))

Really like the pictures, specially 'morning shower'

Not so sure bout the haiku's (don't think i have eva been a fan, though). One piece of constructive criticism is i think you might be saying them a bit too quickly, and also on a couple of them i didn't catch all the words. I listen to a lot of rock music and its impossible to catch all the words, but in that case there is entire verses and choruses worth of lyrics. With your stuff, cause its so short, every word needs to count so it might be worth trying to articulate them a little more.

Just my opinion, for what its worth ;)

I kind of agree with Pedro... There is an element of surprise when the music comes in, the first instinct is trying to interpret
it and get a hold of the musical pattern. In the meantime the words pass you by and it's like "what was that again?" :)

Thanks guys. I kinda thought that myself but I was trying to stick with the basic construct of haiku which is meant to be said in almost one breath. Maybe if I let the music go for a few more seconds before coming in with the verse that will give everything time to settle. Thanks again for the feedback.

Yeah thats not a bad idea, actually. If you let the music run just long enough for the listener to get the basic rhythm, it'll be easier to concentrate on the words instead of trying to interpret everything at once. After all, I am a man, and multitasking is difficult ;)

Fully agree...8:

Really dig the idea ALB !! Besides that, I think your fretless playing really deserves to be heard better (longer) than this...:d
