Hi all,

I've been lurking here for a few weeks, but haven't yet posted. I used to play the bass, had to sell my rig (mid '60's Rickenbacker, Ampeg svt3pro, ampeg 810e) to pay for college, and have regretted it ever since. Shortly after I started playing, I picked up a used Thumb NT in my local guitar center and fell in love. Well, even with the economy the way it is, cars are still breaking down, so business is good for me (I run an auto repair shop). The wife and I recently finished paying off all of our cars, and will soon be done paying her law school tuition. Suddenly the much too expensive dream of Thumb NT ownership is now attainable. Last week I found one on ebay that is in good shape and within my price range. MINE!! It's currently on a UPS truck crossing the USA, should arrive on Thursday. My next goal is to relearn what I forgot and build on it so my chops are *more* worthy of the fine insturment that I will be playing. In the mean time, I figured I'd introduce my self and see if any one can help out with info on my new aquisition. All I know so far is that it was produced in June of '97. Serial # is F-039093 97. Any info would be great.

There's not a better tool for "getting the chops back" than putting a new bass in your hands.

You have to play one mate. No way to describe it otherwise. Fastest, smoothest, man you have to experience it. I passed on an old Dolphin with a wenge neck (saving for a house). If another shows up I'll be all over it.

The low mid growl on a FNA 5 with a Wenge neck that I played was to die for. I'd amputate my legs for that guitar. Cellar deep and clear as glass. So smooth.

Ovangkol is nice too, but too middy for my tastes.
 
awesome, congratulations man! Youll discover that youll pick it up again quicker than when you first started because of muscle memory, have fun and post pics of it when you get it!
 
thanks for the warm welcome y'all. For sure I'll get some pics up on here once I receive it and give it a good rub down. I was definately looking for the wenge neck after reading here and playing one at a local store. 48hrs and counting and it should be in my hands...I'm gonna have more trouble sleeping tomorrow night than a rich kid on christmas eve.
 
Probably some huys here will kill me, but. In my hands wenge and ovankol feels exactly the same...
Wenge is darker sounding, softe, round, and compact.
Ovankol brings more harmonics, more voice to the sound. It depends what you want from your sound.
It's not like wenge is better than ovankol, be aware of that, and buy something that suits you.

Nah, Wenge smells like cigarrettes, that could just be my Fortress though. I do think that wenge has a unique feel, but it's not real significant.
 
my choice of wenge over ovangkol has nothing to do with feel...it's about tone. through most amps I prefer the sound of the wenge neck. that said, I was a bit concerned about swelling of the different peices on the ovangkol neck.
 
It arrived today...man are my fingers sore;) I'm glad to say that the neck is straight and thin, the action is low, and the frets are not worn too badly. The wood of the body has no dings, cracks or scratches, and the only spot of wear is above the upper pickup where your thumb rests. It seems to have new strings and batteries, and came with a strap and strap locks, wax with cloth, and a hard case. All is well.

One intersting thing is that the strap lock on the bridge side is located a bit outside of the edge of the pickups rather than in the center of the bridge like on all the pics I've seen, but there is no hole where it used to be.

Oh yeah, and the wenge on the neck smells like wood and wax, not cigarettes.

Welcome. i don't feel any difference either, but
I do hear one. I have 4 Vetts, and only one of
them has a wenge neck. I wish they all did.

Anyhoot, a wenge neck is a special find cuz it's
out of production [except custom shop] so less
of them turn up all the time. It's kinda like the
EBMM vs pre-EBMM StingRay, in that neither is
better but they ARE different, and so those who
prefer the earlier versions of Wicks or MMs tend
to hold onto them, creating a tight market.

I'm no Vintage Geek. Altho I happen to prefer
wenge for my Wick necks, I also prefer EBMM
for my MM's. Both are just personal taste.

I would've let it slide but ya had to go & say the wenge neck preference thing,givin me no choice.I hope ya understand.;):lol:

Whoot - evvverrrr .....

I wuz just saying I don't value oldness for
sake of oldness ... that I dig Warwicks old
style but MM's new style, just cuz thems
are those what sound like smiles to me.

Also, of the 'vintage' stuff that sticks to me,
I don't care a toot for authentic originality.
Frinstintz my wenge-necked Wick has three
new holes in it, to accomodate my rubber
bumper feets fetish, and it seems to have
been hotrodded by a previous owner, much
to my delite. Got Bartolini PU's, plus a little
black box under the hood. Never growls but
always purrs.

And oh yeah, she's refin'd in Tru-Oil. I get
no thrills outa that Wax-Ur-Wick routine.
