New bit 'o' gear. Need suggestions

I got some money from me Dad for Christmas, and just got a 20% off my next order coupon from Musician's Friend. Something about making up for the problems they had this year while moving warehouses. I ended up haing to cancel one of orders and re-order it. Other than that just a bit of a wait for other things.

Anyway I figured I'd combine the 2 things, the money and the coupon and buy some bass gear. I've got 'til February 29th. Like to keep the total reasonable (500 or so, that's lexible to a degree). I'm good for basses and amps (8 basses and 3 amps) it's accessories I need. Effects, modelers and the like.

You guys are THE source of knowledge I trust. I've been eyeing the Behringer Bass V-amp pro, but is it any good? Plus I can get other stuff on top of that.

What stuff would you guys recommend?
 
I never trusted any behringer stuff since one of my friend's guitar combo just broke by itself within on week (3 knobs weren't working, need to change the input jack, etc...)

I'd say a good wireless system might be interesting, or rackmount effects/tuners.

Hey Doog,
Just my opinion but if you're going to drop the cash I would recommend the Line 6 Bass Pod over the Behringer. The Behringer is just a knock-off of the Bass Pod so you might as well get the real thing. I've had a couple of Line 6 effects products and they make some durable stuff. I tested the Bass Pod when I was shopping for amps and it is a very versatile tool. This is totally my opinion of course! Happy New Year and good luck with the shopping spree.
 
Thanks for the replies guys, this is just what I'm looking for, specific items. What's good and what's bad, or at least not so good.
 
iv told many poeple this before and il say it again.
behringer gets the job done.
its not awesome but its not crap (well in my opinion). berihnger uses good designs with poor parts. i havent had any problems with my berhinger gear but im not in love with it.
if you are into bass for fun then go 4 it but if you take your bass playing seriously, then id suggest you go back to the drawing board :)
 
How about the new Line6 POD X3 ?? It's for bass AND guitar. 8) It's probably slightly better than its predecessor, and it's got tons of features. I use an old BASS POD (first generation I think), and still find it very awesome. Some people here complained that the sound is a bit "soulless", or something like that, but it's nevertheless a fabulous gadget. :D
 
Sorry man but 80% of the Berihnger combo amps come back to GC with many complaints. Usually, "It just stopped working". Imho they make attractive, loud stuff that breaks easily.
 
For me, I prefer analog effects over the all-in-one digital boxes. A Q-Tron is low priced and expressive fun, but only if you like funk.

But how about a great practice and recording tool that gives you great amp, cab, and effects simulations, plus drum patterns, and a 32-sec. sequencer for slowing down and transposing lines from a CD or MP3 that you want to learn, or removing the bass so you can jam along... all in a compact headphone unit that can attach to your bass strap and run on batteries or an adapter and costs only $150.00 - the KORG Pandora PX4B! I just bought one Thursday and it's already starting to open doors to making my practice time more fun and productive, plus it will help inspire creativity and even be useful when I'm ready to lay down tracks.
 
Doog... turn the question on it's head... what are you missing?

Would your life be fulfilled by a certain type of effect? If so, which one? Do you want something for recording? What about a sophisticated drum machine... or some sort of software?

If you just want to spend the money and surprise yourself, get an EBS microbass II... you'll be well chuffed with that!

I'd be tempted to get some sort of envelope filter and do some Bootsy-style playing, just for the fun of it!
 
.... just seen Jay's thread on getting a looper... that's got to be worth considering!

I DEFINITELY need to get the Microbass II soon. I've been GASsing for that for ages. :twisted: I only read good stuff about it here. :D

I've been thinking about getting the Bootzilla pedal for the same purpose...
 
Get a Pandora PX4B or PX4D (for guitar and bass - the newer version of the PX4B), or some EBS pedals. 8)

Thanks for that mate, I haven't been able to find the 4B, just the 4D, great to know it's the right thing. I'm thinking that might be the way to go. I have A Digitech effects pedal, and I'm just playing to the cats, I can get good tone from the SWR and G-K amps combined with the basses. The Pandora sounds very interesting. I also love that it's by Korg. I have a 15 dollar Korg tuner that'll bury the tuner on the Digitech pedal for stability. Always had great luck with Korg products.
 
Sorry another recommendation NOT to buy Behringer. I have experience with the brand and the stuff does not take kindly to being used live. I've had a Behringer desk, DI and pedal and they've all died within months, sadly the desk didn't even make it onto the road and had a total of 5 hours use before it gave up the ghost.

Good idea to consider what am I missing or what would I most like to change and working from there. I can recommend the AKAI Headrush Looper, that is a scream; very rewarding and creative! Imagine layering track upon track of bass and noodling over the top of it. You can even add your own percussive backing with thumps and mutes on the bass... hours of fun and when you get the hang of it it can and does transfer live.

BOSS, Ibanez, EBS, Electro Harmonix and a multitude of other established manufacturers make great pedals dedicated to bass but don't forget some guitar ones translate well to bass.
 
in defence of behringer...i used to use a lot of their stuff for years and never had any problems with them at all. hell...i still have a behringer effects unit in my rack, and a behringer EQ in my PAs rack (it is for monitors though, not FOH)
 
I'm also considering an 8 track recorder, is there a great advantage to having a hard drive as opposed to a different recording medium like a memory card?
