Ok, I just bought a used Corvette $$. Sounds amazing! But, I noticed it has passive pickups with active electronics. So do I stick it in passive input or active input?

Sorry its a stupid question....I've been playing for six years now, but all I've ever owned are passive basses. haha.

But on the active side..it seems like the volume is real low. Is that normal? When I played it through the passive side its really loud.
 
the active inputs lowers the gain from the bass to help not to clip the preamp.
 
If the pre-amp doesn't clip when you plug into the passive input you're safe to use it.
 
I was wondering the same too. A lot of active basses had a lot of output, so you had to use the active input. But modern basses seem to have an output which is comparable to a passive one. But with possibilities to boost lows and highs. So I would say: passive?


And another question: Does a $$ work at passive modus without battery? In other words: If you have battery problems, can you switch to passive modus and go on?

Curtis, yes, the $$ has passive pickups, so even without a batery, they still work.
About the active/passive thing, it is easy.
The normal way to use it is "passive"
The "active" way has a pad, to reduce the signal if it is too strong.
As a rule, a padded signal will sound worse, so use only if needed.
So if you use a bass with a normal signal, use the passive input, then adjust the input using the gain only.
 
i always use the passive input & adjust the gain to suit. It brings a better sound from your amp that way.

Well if you run out of battery, you can pull up the volume know and it works in passive mode, but your eq doest work. The p up knob and the switches still do though.

The PU blend and independent coil switching
on a $$ will get you more tonal variety than
the typical single tone knob on most passive
basses can provide.
​



 
I find that active inputs (or -10db/-15db pads) are only useful for practicing at home when levels need to be kept in check.
