OK, I have an Agulliar Pre-Amp, a set of Bartolinis, a Set of Quarterpounders, and a set of stock MEC active pickups.

I have tried the Barts with the Agulliar, and The active MEC’s with the Agulliar, and am not getting what I want. I have also noticed that I clip at a lower volume now with the Agulliar and MEC’s than I did with my Agulliar and Barts (Barts are passive, MEC’s are not).

The Barts are too warm and dark for the tone I want, and the MEC’s seem to be to bright! I know the QP’s are bright, so my question is this.

Is my problem wiring active pickups with a pre amp? Or is it in the pots? What pots should I use, and what config would you use for a “Lance Dirk/P-Nut” ish tone?

It's not the gear, It starts at the Bass. But before I am asked,

Hey Jade,

When you use active pickups you need 250 - 500k pots. With passive pickups you need 50 - 100 k pots.

Yes, it does! So this leads me to my next question........

If I am using a Volume, Sweep and Stack config of pots, in specific, which pot needs to be what?

I I keep my MEC Active with my separate pre amp, what should each pot be?
 
Ok, does this mean that if I am wiring passive pickups to a pre-amp I use 50-100k pots, and that if I use an active pickup and wire it to a pre amp I need 250-500k pots?
 
That's where I am confused, or is it that if I am running an active or passive pickup, it has to be 205-500 if it is wired to a pre amp?

Newbie I know, but if you guys have any drum questions shoot, drummer for 16 years here...........
 
Are you using a Streamer Stage II? I also craved the Dirk tone so I got a SS2, an Eden rig, dropped Seymour Duncans in the bass, and wahla! Instant Dirk tone! All I need is a sansamp pedal and I'm all the way there.

So Active pickups - 50k
Passive Pickups - 500k

I think you can keep the 500 k volume, even for active pickups, but the pan and the tone should be 50k.

I had passive barts wired to an OBP 3,
and I used a 250k pot for the volumes -
I like the double volume setup rather than a blend.

you can use 500k and it will be a bit brighter.

250k is also good for a blend pot for passive pickups,
and 50k I have used for an active pickup blend knob.

for the EQ part, the pots were all 50k.
for active pickups swap the 250k
volume and blend for a 50k like Flo said above.

Also, you said you clip more with the Aguilar/MEC combo...
are you running it at 9 or 18v? Are you clipping the input
of the amp, or is the signal from the bass distorting?
 
I am actually running 9 v and my tone does distort some. But I am cliping on my head signal.

I was using a 250k volume pot, 50k blend pot, and a 100k tone (Bass Treble pot). This is what came from best bass gear with my Aguilar.
