Need some help ID'ing this SS1

Hey guys, first post :D

I've been offered a battered up SS1 for a trade, and I was wondering if you guys could give me a rough idea of when it was from:





Also, do you reckon it's a good candidate for a sand down + oil job?
 
serial number?


those pups dont look stock IMO

probably not a bad case for a refinish, especially with that damage near the bridge and whatever all that tape is covering up.
 
I don't have the bass, but I'll ask for the serial.

The pickups are Duncan Basslines and one of the pots has been removed I believe.
 
The serial number will be the best way to ID the bass.

Im not too knowledgeable on SS1's but at least the serial can give us a date of make so you know how old it is.

It looks pretty well used in those pics, so id give it a thorough lookover before making the purchase. Check the neck, especially on an NT, if its got any sort of bow or twist, i would avoid it unless its dirt cheap.

Id find out what all that tape is covering up, and why theres that gap in the finish at the bridge.

Also kinda odd, the hardware looks in mint condition in comparison to the rest of the bass.

Anyway, hope you get the bass really cheap, assuming everything is good with it. Would be a great project bass.
 
Yeah, it's in serious need of TLC by the looks of it. The guy said the finish has just started flaking off and that's what all the tape's covering up.

I'll be sure to check the neck, truss rod and frets if the trade does go through.
 
The wood between the bridge & tail piece is unfinished,so think it's fair to say that may expain it flaking off.The position of the rear strap pin makes me think it's pre late 90's but it's gotta JAN2.Also looks like it's been modded to fully passive.It's a good candidate for a re-finish but that black-burst is going to be hard to completely removed.Add all the other work needed to get this baby back to it's former glory & you're looking at quite a big job costing a few hundred bucks,assuming you do all the work &/or sanding.
Personally,I wouldnt offer a trade for anything worth over about $300US.Maybe a hundred or 2 more if I really wanted it.

I'm a bit of a hobby guitar builder so I have some tools (Sanders, scrapers, other power tools etc.) Although I imagine the cracks in the wood could be problematic, I was thinking I could just epoxy them up and go for a darker finish if they were big and if not just leave them.

Then buy it :-) It will sound good, and you'll have your share of fun too. You'll know what to do with her :-)
 
Tis a pity she's flaky. But then aint that always the way?
