Need help chosing an audio device :-)

I wouldn't recommend a computer either, if it were only for music; home theater, maybe.
A computer either sits there during idle eating up power, or you have to deal with wake up time.

Get your music on an iPod with loss-less encoding, if you are not too picky then just buy a dock and connect it to your stereo via RCA.

If you want to mess with external DAC type of setup, sky is the limit.

BTW, now many CD's are you talking about?

I was guessing several hundred CDs, if not thousands, so it won't be possible to fit the whole collection on an iPod with loss-less encoding. But .... if we're suggesting a computer, then why not buy a handful of iPods! Between them you can probably fit your whole collection on, and for less money, and less space, than a computer. Depending on the amount of music, there's the iPod Classic 160GB. I've got over 5000 songs in my collection and most of it's at 256 mp3 and aac. That currently amounts to just under 35GB in music.

The computer ma not be such a bad Idea, since I already have a decent USB Soaundcard (MAudio Fast Track Pro)... Still thinking about it

Yes. My only problem is that I don't see the computer as a friendly device, but as a device that it is always upgrading, updating, restarting, or blocking. I prefer a dedicated tool

doesn't have to be. you can buy a really small case, just a HDD, mainboard with onboard GPU, your soundcard - add something like linux or an old windows (i think 2000 or nt or even 98 would be just fine), your mp3s - no internet connection and you have what you want for little money and it won't update or whatever as long as you don't start installing and messing around with other stuff then music-software.
