Need Advice: Replace v. Repair on JANII on 02ThumbNT5.

At 40% off MSRP, you're getting one heck of a good deal. If you end up keeping the '02, then great. It looks fantastic, and I love that multi-veneer neck!

I actually paid 40% "of" MSRP, so it was really 60% "off" MSRP (consider it good karma for a used Toby Pro that I paid Tobias prices for when I was 19 years old.) Thrilled to be back in the bass world, BTW.
 
I made it back to my quasi-local Guitar Center tonight and got to try out the replacement Thumb NT5 they had ordered me. It was still in the box from Dana B. Goods, and had an '07 SN. As expected the only differences in construction I could spot between it an the '02 were the strap locks, the tigerstripe ebony on the fingerboard, and the JANIII. One other thing I noticed was that on the '07, there's a visible gap between the top/bottom pots on the stacked controls, and that wasn't the case with the '02. (Then again, one of those knobs was missing and they put one on for me in the store--- so who knows what they looked like originally.)

The wood on the body seemed much "healthier" on the '07 (when I ran my fingers against the grain on the Bubinga in the '02 I could really feel the pores.) On the other hand, I think that the grain was slightly more attractive on the '02 (I especially liked the fact that the grain matched up exactly on the seems between the three pieces of the body-- which is not the case on the '07.)

Long story short, I came home with the '07 and couldn't be happier. I'll post some pics over in the thumb club after it's had a week or so to develop a supernatural sheen from the constant waxing. (I plan to alternate the Warwick beeswax and Howard Feed-n-Wax.)

Awesome! Any chance we can see a couple of pics (front and back for example) sooner than a week? I know Tyler over at DBG gave it a good solid wax before shipping it out, so it should have a nice sheen already. I'm just really curious to see how the new one looks. I know she's gotta play great and the sound... well it is a Thumb afterall! :mrgreen:

BTW, did Dana B. Goods also ship a new RockBag and User Kit so that it all matches to the bass? Ordering a new one should have got you all the extras matched up to the bass better than Guitar Center does when they usually manage to give the wrong User Kit/warranty card with each Warwick they sell...

I still can't believe you ended up with a brand new '07 Thumb NT for the price you paid! Great job! And kudos to GC for standing by the customer and giving service worthy of the Warwick name! 8)

I'll definitely post a couple of frontside/backside shots sometime today. Re. the RockBag and User Kit--- yes indeed (I must have 4 or 5 hundred little labels and stickers, all with the right S/N on them now!) Like you, I'm still in shock that I ended up with a factory-new '07 Thumb NT 5 for 39% of the MSRP. (Obviously, I have nothing but kind thoughts for the entire GC organization!)

One other big plus for me with the '07 is the changes to the sizing of the string slots in the "anchor" piece of the bridge. (I prefer playing DR Fatbeams, and had to resort to flattening the end of the B with a pair of pliers on the '02 to get it to fit properly.)
 
I also second the motion to request pics onf the new Thumb!! c'mon man we want to see them.

In related news, I had named the '02 "Wilford Brimley", but I'm calling the '07 "Weesie" after the mutt whose face you see in my avatar (who was put down about a week before the '07 came in.) Hopefull I'll be able to talk my wife into some more flattering shots next weekend (she's much handier with a camera than I am.)

Then what is much more attractive? Bubinga that shoots holographic grain with laster turrets and that is phosphorescent?

I actually said that I thought the grain on the '02 was slightly more attractive than the '07 pictured above :shock:

What I probably meant to say though, was that I thought that the figuring was a bit more exotic on the '02. When I brought the '07 home she was considerably less lustrous than she appears here (she's been getting a coat of the Warwick beeswax every morning and a coat of Howard Feed-n-Wax every night for the past four days, and it really makes a difference!) I'm pretty taken aback how much the Bubinga has come alive since I brought it home!

I think that the Howard Feed-n-Wax in particular really enhances to contrast in the coloring of the Bubinga and gets it looking downright holographic. I'm guessing that has something to do with the orange oil(?)

Anyway... she's definitely a keeper :)
