Hi, I would like to buy a custom dolphin and need advice about wood.

what should i choose for a really good growl? for looks sake I would really love to have flamed maple body/neck and tigerstripe ebony fingerboard, but I've read somewhere that you get more of a dull sound from maple.
I hope you can help me on the matter

Well, this Dolphins are really iteresting Basses. Especially the Dolphin I. It is Neck true, compeletly manufactured from the wood named Ovankgol. The Dophin I created a special bass categorie. Look small or bether say subtile, but it is heavy and the desing ist still avandgard. The sound ist wonderful and powerful. This bass sings. That makes the ovankgol wood.
All the ovankgol basses plays great.
What kind of the music to play on the Dolphin I?
The Dolphin I ist a very individual Bass.
This makes high speed and perfekt attack in the right hand,
the neck ist massive. The Dolphin l ist one of those bases, that man must just to try.
If Your local dealer have not those bass on the store
You must just to ask him.

Is tigerwood a hard wood?
A hard wood vibrates more than softer woods right? and that would bring out the famous warwick-growl more?

Yes, hard woods tend to have more defined tone, which often referred to as growl. Some woods have that definition in different frequency ranges and that's why maple, being a hard wood can sound way different than afzelia, which is also a hard wood. Tigerwood sound very similar to Afzelia and if you want midrange growl this is the way to go.
 
Well, since I play mostly metal I would like a low-end growl more. I have to get through those damn 7 and 8 string guitars that steal my thunder :wink:

for looks sake I would really like AAA flamed maple, but I don't have a clue what the different woods do for the sounds....

Well... here's the thing about maple, it is a bright sounding wood. If you want low end I suggest using an Ash body and for the look maybe a AAA maple top. That way you get both.
 
I like the afzelia wood more than ovangkol for the body, I would order a dolphin sn to custom shop with the dolphins inlays and perhaps some modification in the pick ups, like for example two soapbars… perhaps i´ll do it someday. :roll:

I can always recommend the Vampyre SN. It has a fantastic low end, pluss that little crispy high end.

I recommend for your Custom Dolphin the Hipshot mechanics.
They are very easy and definite.
Colours: Black, Gold, Chrom, Alu

How about:

Bubinga back with a AAAA Flame maple top.
Matching flamed Headstock
All Wenge Neck
Black Hardware
Brass Nut or the new JAN3 Nut coming out in 07'

I would also suggest going with a Natural or Colored Stain, with a SATIN or HIGH POLISH FINISH.
Because you really like the appearance of the Flamed Maple top, giving it a finish will protect and preserve the contrasting and eye popping quality of the maple and will actually ENHANCE the grain.

Here's an example of an unfinished flamed maple that hasn't aged so gracefully:
