Hi everybody!
Seems like I am in a bit of trouble. Two problems with different basses, hope someone will be able to help.
First is regarding the brass JAN. When I play an open G string I can hear a loud buzz, but when pressing slightly down on the little screw in the nut where the string sits, the buzzing stops. The string is not touching any frets, so I figure the buzz comes from the nut. Has anyone had this problem?
The other thing is worse and happened to my other bass after couple of gigs. The neck has bowed back seriously and the strings don't seem to have the strength to pull it back. I loosened the truss rod completely but you still can even see the curve. I spoke to my luthier and the only thing we could come up with was shaving the neck a bit so that it would give in slightly. I'd a appreciate a different idea :) The neck thing seems weird because the bass played fine all the time and I had no issues with it whatsoever.
Seems like a black cloud over my head.
Like I said, I'd appreciate some advice.

Can you clarify what bass (and age of bass) this is occurring on, as some Warwick basses have a two way truss rod and this affects the advice. However I wouldn't at this point start shaving necks etc. as your truss rod should be counteracting this and if it isn't then chances are that it is broken and that would be my first line of enquiry BUT let's know which one of your basses we are talking about!

Yes, tell us what year is your bass. If it is an older model, you will need to reverse the trussrod. If it is a newer one, you will have to insist CCW, and it will start to work again, this time bending the neck forward.

The JAN1 rattling is a known issue, that's why we stopped using it (I suppose it is an older model if it has the JAN 1)

You can set the nut well, and fixed it with a drop of superglue.

As Flo says the JANI1 can be sorted easily but if you need to adjust your nut settings regularly then a drop of clear nail varnish is almost as good (and easily available / cheaper) as Superglue/Loctite just be sure to explain to the guys in the band why you have a bottle of nail varnish in your gigbag! LOL
 
Hi, thanks for your replies.
My fault, I didn't mention what basses I was referring to.
My 93' James Earl signature has a brass nut installed. I didn't know that rattling was a common issue. The nut is a pain in the ass when it comes to adjusting comparing to newer JANts, but on the other hand it is brass after all. I suppose the nail varnish or super glue method will solve the problem, thanks again. Just hope my band mates won't find that little bottle I'm about to get. LOL
The neck problem is with the Streamer LX5, it is a CS bass, made in 08, so no 2 way truss rod, I suppose.
It works when I want to tighten the t-rodd, but does not do it's job the other way round. Funny thing is that when I tune the strings 1/2 step up everything goes more or less back to normal, otherwise it is bowed all the way back.

I am sorry for the stupid question Florin, but what do you mean by insisting CCW?

Hi Gusts, sorry, my English sucks :-)
So When you untighten the trussrod, you end to one point where the trussrod is loose. Well... keep turning counterclockwise, and it will start to work again, this time in the opposite direction. If the bass is 08, then it has the new 2Way trussrod, and it should work like that.

thanks for the tip. I was able to set up the bass and everything is more than fine now. I was 100% sure there was no 2way truss rod, because the loose screw had to be turned too many times to make it finally work the other way.
