neck wood

what is the lightest neck wood offered? Is maple lighter then ovagkol? Just wondering cause i want a better preformance bass that downst kill my shoulder. So im trying to make a lightweight bass.
 
I'm pretty sure the heavyest is Wenge then Ovangkol then Maple (then Balsa :P)
 
maple is definitely going to be lighter then wenge and ovankol. maple is a good neck wood and has a different feel then most Warwicks. mainly because most Warwicks dont use maple. i feel it is a little bit more traditional but it can be used for its advantages. maple is very hard and gives a nice quick and brite sound.

IMO balance plays an important part, rather than the overall weight - if not balanced right, even a light bass can seem like a dead weight - the body of the bass has to "hang" in the right place when on a strap, and the reach of your left hand (sorry to any left-handers) has to be just right. If you're making your own bass, that seems to be the real challenge - I'd choose the woods for the tone, not the weight (that's hypothetical... if I tried to make my own bass I'd redefine the term "Frankenstein")
