neck-through or bolted?

depending for which style of music you want. for slower songs, jazzier tones, loger sustain I use NT. For heavier popping, slapping, agressive less sustain tones I use BO construction.

the sound also varies the woods used in a certain modela dn the sound changes even more. :wink:

what atyle do you play?
 
I have a thumb bo 5 and a nt5, I can tell you now that I am more into BO. the sound might not be that colorful and the bass is not that musical itself, but the punch and/or the attack is worth evaluating what is more important for you and the BO somehow seems to cut through better.
NT for sustain - but for how long do you play one note anyway?

I had a couple of NT bass none were warwicks though and there was someting about there sound that I didn't like.I had a charvel NT and the bo version and I liked the bo one better.
 
im going with NT if money wasnt an option... i mean, its better to have sustain and not need it rather than the other way around. and the other thing is that i like how the contour and construction just 'flows' while you have the bass strapped on - it feels good as oppossed to "flat" feeling BO's.

but of course, realistically speaking, money is a very big part of the equation and most of the musical styles i play really dont require the sustain of an NT. and those contour, et al, i can live without those comfort - the way i can live with a car not having those side mirror signal lights (although i really wish my Honda had one *lol*) or those fog lights.
 
I go with:

For fretted basses: BO
For fretless: NT

This is because in a NT the extra sustain and neck wood dominance really lends itself to the fretless tone. Where as the BO lets you get the attack and definition.

I like to use the thumb as a good reference, but i'd love a NT fretless 5, however for fretted my BO just sounds better!
 
Personally... I like fretless with punch and attack... heh! heh!

When I got my Thumb I tried out the NT and the BO... trying to put the price difference and the 2/3 band EQ difference out of my mind. For the stuff I play, I preferred the BO, and it came home with me!

That's not to say I didn't like what the NT did... it just didn't win out on the day. Ideally, I'd like both, and maybe one day I'll get the NT as well!
 
Personally I've got a neck thru Charvel and the Vampyre SN. EVen got a Jackson neck thru guitar. I've always like how neck thrus sounded and felt. The Vampyre is a little bit of both since it's a set neck, but feels like a neck thru. My neck bass will also be a neck thru.
 
I had a big dilemma awhile back with getting rid of my two Spector Euro NT. I was concerned about trading a NT bass for a BO. I did it and no regrets here. I thinks its all a preference. Just like frets and fretless. Pros and cons, if you damage the neck of a bolt on then you just replace the neck. If you damage the neck of a neck thru, then you have it repaired and live with knowing its been damaged.

  • Bolted. Cuz I play FL and cuz it's more adjustable.

  • Therefor I am not fond of dove-tailed bolted necks
    or variations that are essentially bolted set-necks.

 
I'm 50/50.

I'm not a big slap n' pop guy, so the 'quicker attack' arguement doesn't mean much to me, but I do feel BO has a more aggressive sound.

I've also never concerned myself with the 'better sustain' arguement, but I feel that NT has a smoother sound with more presence.

With all things equal, in my little world anyway, I'd have to suggest you need AT LEAST one of each... :twisted:

I like the feel of neck through, or set neck, they have a really solid feel to me.
 
Neck through for me.
They have an extra MMMMHMMMMM sound, like a man's voice coming from his chest.
And I don't think that a Thumb NT or a SSII have less attack than a normal bolted bass ;-)

However, I like some BO basses too. For example the streamer LX, it is sooo easy and fun to play :-)
