Thanks, I think so too. I was wondering how it would be viewed here since we're used to the outward sweeping horns. It's a like it or not thing I guess on other forums. If anything, I thought the headstock was going to be jumping out at me but it's smaller than it appears and blends in rather well.
 
Sustain is incredible and no dead spots anywhere!

Thanks Verb. It really is quite beautiful in person. I was just looking for a knock around bass for rehearsal and low budget gigs but actually scored a winner. They are building a custom neck for me now, while they are inexpensive. I like the neck on it now but it can't hurt to have a spare.
 
Have you tried any tech 21 stuff for tube modulation? I'd suggest the VT pedal or a Darkglass pedal B7K or B3K will work for some tube-like saturation to give that Carvin warm vintage tone!

Anyways, I bet with the Hellborg, it still sounds amazing, I bet you gig it out, you might not want or need an extra pedal for tonal desires. It's hard to make a tasty bass tone any more tasty that it already is!

The tube thing would just be for occasional use at home. I'm leaning towards an inexpensive hybrid like Markbass Ta500, or something with a tube gain. I cranked it through the HB for a minute tonight and it sounded like a modern, ballsy jazz bass. Very vocal and clear. Nice, even output across all strings. I didn't even need the DR FatBeams I bought for it and immediately put on. I put back on the med-lt nickel rounds it came with. I'm actually going to give these strings a thumbs up as well. Silky smooth to the touch and really bring out the throaty sound while keeping things warm.

Nice playing, man! I can hear that particular Ampeg character. Your sound is really deep, suits reggae just perfect. :)
 
Thanks Simon! I like Ampeg tube sound but all of these Svt types are not to my liking. I played through the Sansamp into the Hellborg rig on a gig last night and was VERY happy. I'm still experimenting with the HB and it continues to amaze me.
 
I'm not an Ampeg lover at all. Prefer playing line-in instead of using their amps. But as a sound producer I know many cases when it can be extremely useful. As a bass player I would rather play through Mark Bass, Warwick or Hartke if possible. Never have tested Hellborg line unfortunately, but I'm sure it's damn good in all terms :D
 
Interesting choices. Can I ask which Hartke you like? I like the tube emulation on their 3500 head but not much else. We aren't all supposed to like the same things but as a sound man, i would like to hear your take on the brand. What I like about the Hellborg, is it's ability to keep up and keep me clean at gig volume, even on the lowest notes. Also, i'm not good with dialing in my sound on most amps and the Hellborg makes it easy. Imagine when i finally learn how to use it! I'll see if I can find my clip, playing my PNut thru a Hartke stack at a studio.
 
Yes, HA 3500 amp + 410XL+ 115XL cabs sounds killing! It suits my needs really good. I can't name their tube channel an emulation thing, according to the schematics. Probably they use some kind of filtering at that channel also, cause a tube sound itself cannot be that different from the solid state one. All in all it sounds really nice while mixing solid state and tube channels. I prefer general clarity in my sound and try to avoid saturations of any kind except tape one during recording process (It adds desired amount of compression to my signal to sit in the studio mix nicely), that's why the ratio I usually use on Hartke amp is 30%-tube, 70%-solid state.

Pretty sure the HB is comp free. The system just works really well for me and I haven't really explored the possibilities because I get what I want right away. Here's me experimenting with the tube drive at about 11:00 on the Hartke, no comp, no pedal.

About da sound ... I agree with da both of U that Ampeg haz it'z own character, and either U like or U don't (to each iz own iz da right term iirc) ... I bought my Ampeg amp 21 yearz ago and it haz never let me down but I can imagine that sumone who for example likez to slap or play funkier stuff will have a different opinion about da Ampeg sound ... cauze no matter how U twist da knobz on that thing, U'll alwayz hear it'z an Ampeg ... :lol:

And maybe I'm prejudiced ... :lol: ... but I honestly think da sound on da 1st vid (imho !) suitz da reggae style better than da sound of da 2nd ... since a few weex we play a few reggae/ska tunez with da band too (not az good as ur band of course :lol:) and then I alwayz fully cut da highz and pump up da bass eq on my Infinette ... and if I'm really in a good mood I don't forget to switch on da ultra bass of Ampeg too ... but I'm no expert of course ... :lol:

Otoh I waz amazed by da clarity (and da beauty) of da sound on da 2nd vid ... I really like it but I'm afraid it would show my mistakez too much ... 8:
 
Hey, thanks much Rob! I'm just glad I don't have to do some of the bass acrobatics I see some of the monsters here pulling off. I just have to remember timing, feel and shake the place! I only know that I'm doing it right if people are dancing.
I fully agree on the tone thing. The first video was pretty much what I'm looking for, for that song. The second was just playing with the Hartke tube:). I never thought I'd be showing that to anyone;). I'm still learning so much from all of you here, I thought I could at least throw up a sound reference in case someone like me is looking for "that clip" that helps you decide on a piece of gear. I think it can be as helpful as shredding alone through studio gear if you're just doing what I'm doing, just playing a little bass with some friends;). I've also realized that there are several different reggae tones to be had, ranging from muffled and deep (as done on 60's jazz basses) and big farty tones (as done on 70's jazz) and even some with just front pick up. Modern reggae is more clear and hi-fi (Warwick sytle). I used to just set the bass one way and play everything until I realized that I tend to play with more feeling when I hear tones appropriate to the song and style. This, and my love for Fender-ish slap tone, is what made me want a different bass for some stuff. Using the PNut when you don't know how to dial in, can easily be like using a sledge hammer to hit a picture nail. I pull the volume knob and play in the "slap mode" with mid cut and it still growls. My new jazz growls too but in a jazz bass way, with less focus with more "air". My PNut needs an input jack right now, so, I chose not to use it but I'll try to get a clip up going through the SABDDI into the HB. I pretty much just set the DI and adjusted my tone by rolling off one pick up a bit and messing with the tone knob. I must say that I'm liking the V/V set up a lot. It seems to offer hotter output and more clarity.
