My new Nobby...

...arrived today. Unfortunately two of the machine heads have been damaged; does anyone know what the best replacement for these is? The Warwick Parts site doesn't seem to have an exact match.

And what's the rule for dating these Nobbys? Mine says it's number 462.

Thanks for the quick help, but those are guitar tuners - would they really fit?
In any case, the tuners on the bass have slots on top for the strings, whereas those Schaller ones have a whole drilled through them, which I fear wouldn't take a bass string (especially since it's the E and A tuners that need to be replaced).
 
You are right. I know 100% that they are schallers, I'll try to find out which model

Thanks! Any ideas on the date of it? The strip down the middle looks too dark to be maple which I think you said (maybe a long time ago - I've been exercising the Search facility!) was a feature of the oldest Nobbys.

And looking through other photos I can't see another Nob with the trussrod so visible at the body end. Should I be worried about this?
 
462... hmm... so mid-to-late 80's... we really need to get a database of those basses to be able to figure out the variations and the woods and such...

That sounds like a good idea. I'll see what else I can dig up from searching the forum. But not many owners seem to be clear about dating, and some that are clear seem suspicious to me, e.g. "the plate with the serial number is missing, but it's from 1985".

Could you post a picture with the back of your bass please? Or a close up pictures with the front and back of the tuners.

I'll do that tonight when I get home.
The tuners look pretty much the same as on the current Nobby model () and if I could get a set of those I'd be happy, but they don't seem to be on the list of available parts.

I think you can buy this: Schaler M4, and keep the original buttons ;-)
This looks to be the direct replacement, except for the buttons.
 
Thanks; I'd just been coming to the same conclusion since I noticed my buttons are actually ok - it's just the shaft that's been twisted.

I'll get some pics up as soon as I've got the new pegs fitted (no pics, no pegs!).
But I can tell the bass just won't look right until I've put some gold strings on it too :)

Hey man, what kind of sound do you get out of the nobby? Looks like it would give a fairly retro sound, I'd like to see some pics of you wearing it...don't think I've ever seen that before.

Thanks - that's pretty much what I thought - the tuners look identical to the M4 2000 but with small buttons. I'm nervous about trying to put guitar buttons on bass pegs, but we'll see. I've ordered some M4 2000s and when they arrive I will try the old buttons on them and let you all know how they go.

Hmm, I find it hard describing sounds because everybody seems to have different benchmarks. I would say it's not a retro sound at all, but a very modern sound, but then "retro" to my mind means Motown-style p-bass playing, and anything from 1980 onwards is modern! ;) And of course I'm biassed because I usually play fretless and like a very dark sound. By contrast a fretted bass with new strings (I usually prefer vintage strings ;)) sounds very bright.

I'll see if I can sort out some photos of me playing it; but don't hold your breath - I'm pretty slow at getting around to technical stuff like that!
