messed up truss rod. how do i solve this ?

hi.

let me describe the patient:
the head of the truss rod (where you put in your tool in order to adjust the rod) is messed up by the previous owner who never learned how to treat a screw head (what can be so difficult here ??).

what can be done to make the truss rod adjustable again ??
i would like to do it myself, since i had bad experiences with all the dealers in this region.

must the truss rod be changed or can the head be repaired ?

if the truss rod must be changed, how should that be done ?
must i take the fingerboard off ? (man, i really won't do that !!)

i would be happy if you could give me a few tips

You know, Wurzburg is only a few hours from Markneukirchen... :wink: I'm fairly sure that the rod can be replaced without removing the fretboard - Greg knows all about this process I hear - so I wouldn't start freaking out just yet. See if you can get in touch with someone at Warwick and I be tthey can help you get his sorted out pretty quick!

I saw this truss rod fix on a non Warwick bass once.The dude stripped the end of his rod & couldnt engage the tool at all so he drilled into the tip of the rod,threaded the hole & inserted a short bolt.He then could use a socket to adjust his rod.

yeah, it's a good idea to go the warwick headquarter, but since it's not a new bass, i would have to pay quite a lot for the repair job (forcing me to wait even more till i can afford a lamborghini, right ?)

thumperton, it must be my bad english (it's much better than my chinese though), but i didn't understand how the screw is mounted to the tip of the rod ?
it can't be bolted in, since it must be able to rotate the screw in both directions without getting it off the tip.
do you think glue would be good ?

ok, it seems possible to fix the problem without changing the whole truss rod. yet, i would like to know how one can change the rod (it's a bolt on warwick!)

The fixed rod I saw wasnt a Warwick bass so I dont know what the tip looked like before the damage was done,I dont know how he stopped the bolt unscrewing.
Your not that far from the factory,maybe a new neck is the way to go.You'll have to pay for it & give them your damaged neck,they dont sell necks separatly,only as a replacement.The rod can be replaced without removing the fingerboard.

I agree that the best way to deal with this is to let the factory handle it, but if that's not an option, I'd suggest a variation on Greg's idea.

Drilling and tapping the rod and installing a bolt would work if you were only tightening the truss rod. Loosening the rod would likely just unscrew the bolt, so using glue would be a necessity.

I'd suggest using a short section of a 5mm hex wrench (or perhaps 6mm if it's really stripped). You can grind it to length with a grinder. Using a good two-part epoxy glue inside the rod end, you could tap the wrench section into the truss rod end using a small hammer. After the epoxy sets, you could adjust the rod using a hex nut-driver.

If all works out, you could still use the truss rod cover plate and no one would be the wiser.

Hi actually it depends on the kind of truss rod.

On my thumb Maple Monster (currently in Warwicks hands
it will be about 350 Euros.
The Fingerboard has to be removed:-(
