Meeting your band

Just curious as to how everyone came to join/start their bands. I actually am not currently in a band, so this has really got me interested in this. I haven't really been in an actual band since I've graduated high school. I have a couple gigs here and there for old friends, but that's about it.
 
It's hard to get together with all my friends anymore but my old neighbor when I was growing up got a drum set after I got a bass - Over the years a few other friends got guitars and we had lots of fun jamming in basements and studio space - I need to find a band again but its a lil harder with total strangers - You also need to have the same style interest - For the time being guess its just improvising to classic rock songs on the radio and playing along with my drum machine
 
for my current band:
i'm lucky to have friends who play instruments, one of my good friends plays drums so its an ideal combo. He was playing a church band and asked me to join that meant i met this awesome guitarist and anyway a few weeks later after a few jams we've got a band together making songs with possible small time record label interest (friend of the guitarist but really likes the music) and things are going great.

So for me it was a string of meeting stemming from friends who were in bands, looking for bands or just wanting a jam.
 
Hmmm I play what I can... And my current band which I just joined Knife Of Liberty needed a bassplayer so I called them. Other than that it's mostly other people who give me a call if they need a bassplayer for a gig or know someone who's searching... You just have to get out there! :D
 
my band needed a bass player to heelep them out for a few gigs after their bassist was ill. they knew people who knew people who knew me :wink: so somehow got the job and never left
 
I was hanging out with a friend at a record shop (like Virgin Megastore) and I had my bass in its gig bag on my back since I was supposed to rehearse with my band right after.


Then a guy ran into me and asked me "excuse me, but are you a bass player ?"

I answered "yes", and then he explained me that he was a guitarist and that his band was looking for a bassist, etc... We gave each other our numbers, I went to their rehearsal the week after and I joined the band... It was 2 years ago. Soon after my other band split up, and then the band i just joined became my only band.

I'm very happy with this band... Sometimes things are getting a bit tensed but we really like each other, we're like a little family.


It was my bass on my back that led me to this band ! Destiny is amazing. When I think about all the things I did with this band, I'm thinking "what if I was not in that record shop ? How my musical life would have been then ?"


I thank God (or whatever there is above) for that opportunity.

This is honestly how things should be in my opinion.
 
Yeah sure. The things are getting a bit complicated sometimes, but at the end of the day, we're all good friends and when we hang out we're always laughing our a**es off...

Well I think this is the way it usually happens :-) I've played with a lot of great musicians, and with bands that made history in Romania, and I would like to say that this is something I did... but I cannot. I was more like a witness :-)

The truth is that the Destiny (well, I prefer to call it God) had a big part :-)
I've never went to an audition in my life, It always happened to be in the right place at the right moment.
And I am not much of a bassist either... honestly ....
 
You should check out your local music stores, and see if any of them have message boards, as these are usually a goldmine of possible jam contacts, and you really can find people on ANY level!

My current band (Tv IV Dogs - pronounced Tv For Dogs) is a collection of music students and friends from the university I study at. Its a really groovy and different style of music, with very prominent bass melodies.

Nice music 8) The bass line on "Prison Drugs" sure sounds alot like "Suite 1" by Mr. Bach himself :wink:
 
Mostly I run into musicians at parties, but hanging out where musicians meet, like rock`n`roll-pubs or similar, can lead into something. I just run up to people and ask "don`t you play in..." and sort of offer myself if they lack a bassplayer some time. Spreading my number and name in an environment really helps.
 
I met various musicians I jam with at a student organization for student musicians. See if your college campus has a musicians' guild or anything like that. I first found out about the Rutgers Musicians' Guild via their facebook group when I was looking for people to jam with. Since then, I've made friends, jam buddies, and people who became bandmates.

Haha! Well spotted! Yeah, its kinda like a tribute to a tribute...

I started trying to work out Vic Wootens 'Classical Thump' (his adaptation of Bach to Bass) at a jam session one day, and I never quite got it exactly right, but the other guys got some wicked parts down to it, and it worked out really nicely! Then, before we knew it, 'Prison, Drugs and Economics'! ;)
