Mac Recording

Heard good stuff about apogee but im looking for something bigger. At least 10 I/O and 4 mic pre's would be good

I'd go with macs. From my own experience I've found macs to be ore stable and quicker. You can build PCs to be better but it takes a hell of a lot of knowledge. Ive recorded in many studios and again I think only one used windows. All of the engineers prefered macs for the stability and reliability.

Concerning software...if your on a budget I'd go for logic express. Its a fantastic platform to record with. If you've got more money to spend I'd go with a full logic program. If your not recording in a professional capacity logic express would be more than enough though

My neighbour's a jazz/blues guitarist & is wanting to do some recording next year with me & a drum machine.He's never owned a computer,or a mobile phone.This guy's still living in the dark ages,but the dawn's in sight & he's asked me to help him buy some good quality recording gear.Budget isnt a problem so I'm looking at Macs.
He wants a lap top,but I dont think it needs to be portable.Is there Macs that are the same in either desktop or laptop?
What would you guys suggest?
We're using it mainly for recording,but he also wants me to teach him to use the net as well on it.

Greg - I would go for the new MacBook Pro. While they wont have the power of a desktop machine I think it's better in the long run to be portable.

+1 . macbook pro's are fantastic. for your mate i suggest teaming it up with logic express

I switched to Mac... finally... :) I use now a 17' macbook pro with 4 gb RAM and it's one amazing piece of machinery.

in a few days I should get the Apogee Duet. All the reviews are great! However, this is a soundcard for MAC only. I will write back after i'll get it and use it a little bit.
 
I'm running a MacBook 2.16ghz Intel Core 2 Duo with 2GB ram, and Garage Band at the moment. I've run a 1/8" line from the head phone jack on my amp to my line in on the Mac before and I get all distortion, so I'm looking to get something else.

I'd been looking at the Line6 TonePort UX1 since I'm on a budget and it's $70, but I'd like one with a microphone since I need to record an acoustic guitar as well. I've got to stay under $150, and I don't care if software is included or not as Garage Band is just fine for my purposes at the moment. All together I'll be recording an acoustic guitar, electric bass, vocals and some bongos.

Any recommendations? Should I get the $70 UX1 and try to find a cheap condenser mic or get something all-in-one like the Line6 BackTrack?

Hello!

If you get distorsion, try to reduce the input level... you must go to System preferences, Sound, and on the input tab you should adjust the "Input volume".

Greg... Not sure if you are already aware of TweakHeadz Lab or not, but if not, it is an excellent resource for home recording. Lots of great tutorials and equipment reviews and comparisons. I highly recommend it.



From all my reading, the most important factor in achieving a quality recording is the preamp you go through, and that leads itself to a quality interface. I really like and am hoping to get a M-Audio Delta 1010. Well worth looking into.

You can buy a decent mike for about 50 bucks and plug it into the UX1
