Yesterday I received my Epiphone Les Paul Classic. Gibson fans will know that the high end Epiphones are essentialy the same instruments Gibson sells. Okay the mahogony may not be from Hunduras.

The one thing that differentiates a true Les Paul from the masses is the angled neck. And the difference it makes is unreal. The strings lie esentially parallel to the neck. NO OTHER guitar plays like an LP, not even a Warwick.

Of course it doesn`t play like a Warwick. Why? It`s a bass.

But you`re a guitarist, so I can forgive you. Easily.

I play a bit of guitar myself (albeit very, very badly). And I have to say that Les Pauls do feel fantastic to play.

i don't like them. they're heavy and i don't like the way they rest when i sit down to play them.

as much as i dislike fender basses, I'll play my telecaster till the day i die. what i REALLY want, though, is the remake of the 71 tele but i want to load it with EMG 81s

Actually I'm a bass player, I just goof around on the guitar. But it struck me that the angle of the neck really makes playing the thing so much easier. Your post did remind me that there is a Les Paul bass. I'd actually never buy one, for some reason I think it makes an awesome looking guitar, but a crappy looking bass (kinda the opposite of the Rickenbacker 4000 body). But I was interested to see if it had a tilted neck, it doesn't, they're flat tops. I can't see any reason why you couldn't make a tilted neck bass, but there may be a reason. Maybe the benefit of the neck angle only manifests when playing chords. Warwicks do play really well. And I've just played a RockBass, if German Warwicks play better I have got to try one. The only bass I have comparable to the Fortress is my SUB, and if you've played a MusicMan you'll know that's one helluva compliment.

You play a Warwick and you're griping that a Les Paul is heavy?

You must know that sometimes great tone comes from weight. Of course you did throw a Tele at me. The ONLY guitar I'd own other than an LP. I did look at Teles, but I can't keep track of all the lines Fender has these days, which are decent and which suck. I know enough about Epi's to keep out of trouble. If you'd said anything about a Stratocaster, that would be a different story, hate the things. Though Fender did make an AWESOME version simply called the Strat. Not the hot pink fruity metal POS with the lightining bolt STRAT blazing across the headstock. This was the Stratocaster that might have been. My friend bought one used in 1989 for $1200, later found it was the deal of his life. Walnut body and neck, 24 carat gold plated hardware, brass bridge and nut. The walnut really tames the shrillness of the Stratocaster. So I guess Fender does make one guitar (or at least did) that I'd love to have.
