I can see the point of having the low strings fretted and the high strings fretless, but why the middle ones only??? :shock:

i found that you get the best double bass sound from the A and D strings...maybe this or the someone was smoking some crazy stuff at the time of making it.

This is a great point. The action on the fretless string will be too high and the action on the fretted part might be too low, unless you put a JAN I on it.

yeesh, you cant even bend some of the notes, you will lose theur articulation if you roll of of the fret or roll into the side of it. that thing, in my mind, is pointless.

I wondered about that myself, but it looks like there is suficient space for bending notes on the 'inner' fretted strings.

Besides, you could always just practice bending the other way...?

i was thinking about this....maybe its for slap? as imo the outer strings are always better/easier for slap and then you can do a fretless jaco thing in the middle strings....but i'm really just guessing now

I think the high and low strings were left fretted so that it could facilitate slapping and popping - at least high string popping requires frets to sound right - then the middle is left fretless to get that mwah sound.

I have seen fingerboards that were fretted half way and then fretless the rest of the way, but the fretless part was raised to the level of the frets in an attempt to keep the intonation consistent. Then there is the frets drop out switch (does that exist or is that an idea?), but that would be an intonation and tuning nightmare. And there's a company that makes a special bridge system that is supposed to give a fretless simulation... :roll: And don't get me started on fretless emulation pedals...

In the end, I don't think any hybrid idea really works well - sorta "the mediocre of both worlds" :lol: or worse...
