...of day one of a two day recording session for the church I play at. They're doing 13 tracks in two days, all done live, which is no easy feat eq'ing a 3-piece band in a sanctuary with vocalists. One thing I can say that was easy was the bass. I really forgot how great Warwicks sound recorded; a lot of people will talk about having a clear, or "true" tone. I'm more concerned with consistency, as in "will it sound like my bass through my different amps and just direct?" The LX shined throughout the entire evening, which covered everything from pop-rock, world-beat (with an octave pedal no less), indie and traditional. There's a lot more varying styles coming up on Sunday, but shouldn't be a problem.

Once I get some tracks (the soundguy did a pretty decent job of mixing everything for the recorded tracks) I'll be sure to toss them up.
 
Nice Jon! Sounds like the LX is getting a good ol' work out! Some clips would be great mate.
 
Thanks, guys. Since switching over from the multi-effects pedal to my current setup (utilizing the DI of the Bassbone), I've been extremely happy with the tone I'm getting from the LX. It has the low end, but it's tight and focused with a good amount of punch. Closest I could approximate it to is a little beefier, growlier version of John Patitucci's sound.

I'll definitely post some tracks when I get them, not just for bragging purposes but I am really lucky to be able to play with two different percussionists at the church. They're both really phenomenal players; today's session should be a treat, since it's the first time we're recording/playing with both of them at the same time.
 
Finally had a chance to get on here and update y'all on the second CD recording session. All in all, it went really well. It's funny that I got the Warwick Newsletter today, because Lex's article was exactly what I was thinking of throughout the entire process. A lot of the tunes had varying styles (eg. on Sunday we did a choral piece, an R&B tune, two folk numbers (both on upright, and one of them I was channeling Edgar Meyer and Yo Yo Ma...or trying to), an african tune and a jazz/latin tune. Each instance, like Lex mentions in his article, I was trying to pull from my repertoire of listening to all this music, things that would be important for each style.

The best compliment of the evening though (again, in relation to Lex's article) was when I was talking to the sound guy. He mentioned that of all the musicians, I didn't have a solo on the album (the percussionists did, as well as the pianist). The pianist said "While Jon doesn't have a solo per se, there is no other musician on this record whose voice is so represented. You can hear his attitude and vibe on every song through his notes."

Okay, here are two tracks from the Friday recording session. The first one is a regular that we do in church a lot (believe it or not), so it was kind of apropo to have it as the first track. The LX with the help of an octave pedal (that's right, I use effects in church).

The second tune was one that was a special music piece that, after we played it through, convinced the music director to contact the writer and secure the rights to record it for the disc. Very cool song, that I patterned the bassline off of the cello part that the original recording had.

I get a kind of Beatles vibe from the Last Song...Beatles and Pink Floyd. I love water percussion!

Samuel, I agree. Our percussionist is a MONSTER of a player, and she shows up every week with some new percussion item I've never seen before. It's crazy. As luck had it, it was playing in this church that had her ask me to fill in for her band, which led to me playing with them regularly.
