Jazz Songs

Hello everyone, i need to find one jazz song for a school project, i have to perform it also. I'm looking for something in more of the cool jazz era ie. Miles Davis

My band is

Trumpet
Alto Sax
Trombone
Piano
Bass
and possibly a drummer

So if you have any suggestions it would really help me out :d
 
All off you should own a real book, and if you do, then just pick a song out of that. If you don't, you fail as jazz musicians...no joke.

Of course there are thousands to choose from - but any of these would be a great start.

Pretty much every jazz musician I have met would say that to some degree relying on a real book and charts would qualify as "failing as a jazz musician"...
 
Oh, I would reccomend start with some blues tunes... All Blues, Freddie the Freeloader, Equinox, Nows The Time, Straight No Chaser, Mr. P.C or better yet throw together some chords to a blues, write a quick melody and blow, blow, blow!!!

uhmm? ok, then i fail as a jazz musician but, it still need to know a song. I forgot to mention, we also get graded on complexity of the piece, so it can't be the basic stuff, i was thinking of milestones by miles davis.

In that case, try Windows by Chick Corea. I f'n love that song.

Also, Micheal, New York standards are different than Wichita,KS standards, and how can you expect to learn songs without looking at em? (yes, i am a visual learner).

I have been taught two differnt ways- I refer to them (for lack of a better term) as the "old method" and the "new method". The old is where one player says maybe "Minor blues, 4 flats" and starts counting. Or the fellow will tell you "ii-V-I modulate etc., 1 sharp" and starts counting.

The "new method" is you get a chart, analyze it, and play with it for the whole song. I say new method because its what is most common now- even tho the "new" method taught by alot of people too is a hybrid.

I have no problem with fakebooks- I just think saying that someone fails as a jazz musician if they don't use fakebooks is absurd, because the best guys don't use 'em, and they didn't even exist in the golden age of jazz! I think both methods are good, and of course, the best way for me is all in balancing the two. I use charts often becuase I simply don't have the time to memorize every song that gets thrown at me- but my favourite tunes I memorize so that I can change the key on the fly and really jam them!
 
That song was cool, i ran it by the band, but not a lot of them liked it. I'm thinking of doing Bitches Brew by miles davis, but i have no clue where to get that sheet music

Bitches Brew=the beginning of free jazz
as far as i know, there isn't any sheet music
 
The majority of compositions on Bitches Brew are just that: compositions. There's a melody and form, just very free.
And check out Pharaohs Dance from the same group on youtube, very, very good!

This is also a song that i'll be performing for Festival (band competition) in a month or so, I HAVE A SOLO!!

The genre that prides itself on being void of boundaries has compulsory reading?:lol:
Not to be disresctfull Andrew but that's gotta be the biggest load I've heard in a while.
