JAN III interchangability (?)

If you have a JAN III brass for the same bass and overall nut width, but wanted to radically switch tunings (i.e. accomodate vastly different string gauges), could you do so by only switching the slotted upper portion of the JAN III with a new one having different slot widths?

In other words, are the slotted portions of the brass nuts interchangable? Or would you still have to remove the entire string nut to do conversions?

All of the different JAN III Brass nuts feature the same string slot widths, so unfortunately replacing that part wouldn't solve your problem.

You (or a reputable luthier) could try widening the slots on the JAN manually with a luthier's file if you are aiming to fit custom string gauges. Just be careful to do a little at a time, and don't shim too much -- there's no going back if that happens.

Hi Iamcat, have you tried using different strings? I think they should fit the slots anyway, worse case scenario you adjust the nut a bit.
