Jack Bruce - 2005 Cream

Hi, I am new to this forum.

I love the sound of Jack Bruce during the Cream reunion back in 2005. He was using his signature ltd edition model.

I guess a warwick thumb NT 4 fretless is the closest I can go to that particular model but I guess I should replace the pickups too (MEC J/J active)

Any suggestion?
Any good recommended shop with competitive prices to buy in Europe?
 
Jack's Thumb isn't actually that similar to his signature Thumb, but I think any old fretless Thumb NT4 will get the job done.

His Thumb was rather old, so I can't imagine it having the 3-band EQ modern Thumbs (and his signature) have. I think it'll have a 2-band preamp, but I doubt he used it much. The pickups may have been EMG as well, but I could be wrong about that.

I also read that his particular bass has a bubinga fingerboard, since Thumbs were new at the time and they were doing some experimenting. Ebony should be just fine.

I think a lot of these nuances are moot (preamp, pickups, bubinga fingerboard) because he had a very distinct rig and EQ curve. He played Hartke amps, with those aluminum cones, and more importantly - frowny-face graphic EQs (i.e. cut bass and treble, crank mids). I think besides having any fretless Thumb (heck, even a bolt-on) 4 string with a frowny-face graphic EQ, you'll get the bulk of his sound.

Personally, if you're after competitive pricing, keep an eye out for a used bass.
 
Check out a thread on this forum from 1/30/10,which describes a few of the details on his bass used during the reunion of 2005.There was also info a few years ago in a Warwick newsletter giving details about 3 new basses cut from old Brazilian Rosewood (currently on the CITES list) which HP Wilfer had stored for years.One of these basses can be seen on the Guitar Aficionado website dated 9/21/12.Hope this helps.
