ok so while i was playing my thumb last night during mu jazz band's practice, my volume crapped out on me and made some weird crackling sounds. when i first bought this bass, i had that problem, so my guitar tech ordered in a new pot. how long would it take for him to put that in? i need it done as fast as possible, as i got a marching band contest tomorrow and have my church band to play on sunday... GREAT timing too because my other basses are out at my other techs for adjusting... hope id doesnt sound like i was being irrisponsible or anything, but i thought my other basses would be in on tuesday. so how long would it take him to fix that?
 
Putting in an new pot does not take long as soon as he takes up the bass ;) would be 15 minutes max to remove the old one and put in a new one, offcourse he should have the spare part ready...
Another question: are you sure its your pot? have you tried another bass on the amp and have you tried it after an hour or so?

A potmeter does not just die you know, i am a tech person and i do all my tech stuff myself so i know what i am talking about.
 
it is the pot. not the amp. when i turn it on to passive, i get signal, just a weird scratchey signal, and the active signal is gone...

+1, sounds like a low battery to me, since the thumb has active pickups they also need a battery to operate so bypassing the preamp might not fix the problem. thats the first thing I would check..
 
get a new battery.. then get a can of Caig DeOxit and squirt the pots.. should be just fine after doing that..

Once you know its the bass check in order of cost and difficulty to replace, which is also the order of likelyhood of failure. It goes battery, jack, wiring connections then preamp and pot components finally pickups. Its what we did in repairs.
 
Dude pot replacement should not take long. Hell, even I can manage that and we all know wat happens when you let me loose with a soldering iron :confused:

depends on the pot, some have preamps mounted on them (Aguilar I think), and ones like the stacked vol/pan/switch ones are a mess of wires.

A pot on a P-bass is a peice of piss shure but some modern systems are a pain in the arse to re-wire
