"Heavy" is a bit subjective - when I was considering buying a Corvette $$ - some reviews and opinions were that it was a bit heavy - but I don't find it heavy at all - but I am 6'2" and "well built". I find the balance more important, and the $$ balances well for me, plus I use a "comfort" strap...
You definitely need to follow Ollie's advice and try some out. But beware, if you decide the Warwick sound is for you, nothing else will do... took me years to find out.
If weight really is a problem, consider a short or medium scale bass - Warwick make them...

Good that you mention the strap. I use Levy's 4" leather straps and they feel great, even with my 10.4 pounds Thumb 6 strings and when I'm playing my hollow-bodied Infinity it's like I'm playing on a tiny feather.

Well, I guess the topic starter doesn't know yet which sound he wants, so I'd suggest not giving all that money yet. If you are looking for a light bass, don't look at warwicks. I'd suggest a Yamaha or a Cort for good and cheap introductory basses, and if you buy used you can save even more. Then after one or two years when you'll be more comfortable and experienced with bass you can look at more expensive instruments, as you will have decided what you like and what you don't like. Anyway, best thing you can do is walk into a store, try all the basses you can in your price range and come back to say which ones felt right to see what more experienced people think, then make your decision. I'd also suggest that you ask in a more neutral forum like harmony central, here the most responses will be "go warwick go"

if you buy something just because of price you will never be satisfied!! you need to stop thinking about money, and decide what is right for you. money is only the gateway to your music, it should never matter.
just because a bass costs $1,000,000 or $10 does not make a difference! playing it is what counts, and if one bass is you then nothing should stop you.
I saved for a year to get my warwick, and lived off beans and rice for 6 months. but now i've got it i can't live without it.
just try what you think will be right for you, and if it clicks don't worry about money. money should never have any relation to music or any art in my opinion!! but society is built that way, so people have got to work to feed families, pay rent etc.

I'm still a Rockbass fan - but I now know from exerience that a "full" Warwick is a very different beast.
However, my Rockbass Corvette looks and sounds great - the wood is the same as the US P-bass I had - alder body and maple neck. I can honestly say I would not swap the Rockbass and have the P-bass back - that's no bull$$hit!

I agree in full. I also started out with a Rockbase and even though it's not a "full" Warwick it gives you a lot of bass to the money. A 4 or 5-string Vette Rockbass is a good start and if you find a used one you are on the right path / mats
