Ibanez say this is a first, but it really isnt. Boutique builders have been doing this for years. Maybe they mean this is the first production model, with this fingerboard.
 
damn I even saw the guy playing it at the Musikmesse but did not make the connection that this is an affordable instrument:-)
 
I tried one, and as 6 string bass user I needed a little time to adjust to a 4 +2 system...

That fretless tone is GREAT. pretty good idea with the EADGDG tuning as well, not too hard to get your head around. I'd like to hear it with a High C/F setup, would be the ultimate solo bass tacked onto an "normal" bass.....drewl. Anyone know how much the go for? Its a SR series so it cant be a stoopid price.
 
I think it's a cool idea... the best of both worlds you could say. The funny thing for me though is, I've been playing fretless for so long now that whenever I try a fretted model my playing sounds like pure crap.
