I love jazz gigs

So I just got back from playing a dinner party
my band and I played about 20 songs, some standards,
some ballads, etc. It was at this fancy mansion that
overlooked Simi Valley. We were just playing songs
out of a "real" book. So we ended up playing for like 2
hours and at the end of the night they gave us $320 bucks.
So there were 4 of us so we each made 80 bucks.
Overall...GREAT NIGHT
I think I like the idea of jazz gigs more than anything else
though just because you show up in dress clothes, play
music that everyone likes get paid a lot more than you would
playing clubs. And you don't have to really rehearse you just
read charts.

Don't have to rehearse? There's a difference between playing the notes and playing the music, especially with standards. Your typical lounge crowd prolly won't notice, though...
 
Well yah that was the gig, we are in jazz band 3 days a week and
there we played most of the songs we played at the party so we had them
rehearsed in this case. but some of the songs that we didn't rehearse
sounded good enough for the crowd to like them.
 






But nobody comes up to you and
flashes a lotta cleavage and asks
"Can you play Mustang Sally, cuz
we wanna dance ! ".

But acoarst there's still gonna be
some jerk yelling "Freebirrrd ! ! "

Yep and I would be that jerk.

One of my housemates in college was playing an acoustic set at the bar we both worked at. I proceeded to get hammered and yelled FREEBIRD about 57 times.

Man, he was pissed and that made it even more hilarious.
 
Could you guys pleaze explain what this "Freebird"-yelling thing is about ?...

I'm starting to get really curious ya know....8:

Okay, I knew it's a Lynyrd Skynyrd song ... but what makes it so funny...jerky...whatevah to shout "Freebird" at a (jazz) band ?

Over here we have a similar joke but we shout "play Creedence" instead :D

Once, long ago, I spent some weeks in da cooler (completely innocent of course, just like all da rest of da dudes that hung out there ;)) so from my own experience I think I can imagine what it must be/feel like for a creature that even is able to fly, to be locked up in a cage....:(

IOW... I still haven't got a clue what this "Freebird yelling" is about.....

Back in the day when "Freebird" first came out, it was a very popular cover tune that always got the crowd going.

Audiences would often become irate when cover bands didn't play it and they would yell "Freebird" as if to say "encore".

As time went on, a**holes like me would yell it just to be a**holes.
