I have arrived - Warwick Streamer Standard German 2000 - Question?

Glad to officially be in the Warwick family with my 2000 Streamer made in Germany. Yes, I know it is not the current German made top dollar streamer, and yes it has the one piece bridge, and yes it has all passive hardware but it is all good to me. This sucker growls like other higher end 4, 5, and 6 string Warwicks I have played and it was very inexpensive.

Two Questions:

1) Could anyone take a look at the pics and confirm the woods used on body, neck, and fret board? I believe carolena, wenge, and wenge but not sure. Have reviewed a few threads but cannot find any confirmed info.

2) Since I got the bass super cheap, might consider a preamp install at some point since the treble/bass adjustment does very little with current electronics (no preamp). Are there any decent preamps out there that do not cost $175 like the Nord's, Aguilar's, etc? Looking for 2 band with simple volume, blend, and tone adjustment (do not like two volume knobs).

***OK, got to say that I absolutely love the neck on this Warwick. It came perfectly set up, has "0" buzz while playing anywhere on the neck, very low action, the frets/board have no noticeable wear, and not a scratch on the neck anywhere (just killer).

***One more thing, I thought my Stingray SR4 had growl but nothing compared to the Warwick. The stingray has more of a "sizzle" compared to the warwick. The Stingray may be better suited for slap and other styles, but whatever, I am in love.

Any thoughts on the preamp would be great

Hi there,

Glad you're enjoying your new bass! I'm not quite sure what the body wood is, I would guess alder perhaps. I'm quite sure the neck is ovangkol with a wenge fingerboard.

As for preamps, this is completely down to personal taste, your best bet would be to search YouTube for different sound clips with various pre's and p'up combos and see what you think. Any decent preamp (such as those you suggest) will be fine though.

With the little info I have gathered I believe the body to be a wood called Carolena (whatever that really is). The fretboard is "wenge" I believe and actual neck is either "wenge" or "ovankol" woods. It would be nice if someone could confirm the neck woods, not that it matters since the bass is awesome.

That body is indeed carolena and your neck is wenge/ovangkol. A Streamer STD was my entry into Warwickland many years ago. Mine was finished in honey violin.

I would look at a Seymour Duncan preamp if you're considering it. The STD's are typically pretty weak on output compared to other passive basses. If you do go the Seymour route make sure you get the one for passive pickups. They make a 2 and 3 band depending on what you're after.

As J said, that bass has a carolena body, ovankol neck and wenge fretboard. I´m no expert on preamps so I won´t comment on that. Just want to add that´s a lovely Streamer, enjoy it.

If you want to use the existing control pot holes and only need a 2 band EQ, this one below will do the trick. It's for passive pickups as well. They also offer a 3 band version but that will require another hole or rewiring for an additional stacked pot.

Last question. Is this an active/battery operated preamp? The others I have seen from Auilar, Norde, Barts, are battery operated 9 or 18 volt (yet function with passive pickups I think). I was hoping to have a signal boost since the volume output on the streamer is quite low. Thanks again for the help guys.

Yes the Seymour is battery powered. Can be either 9 or 18.

Found several preamps with further search. Looks like BassMods puts out a relatively inexpensive 2 band preamp with knobs included for $72. It gets great reviews at TB and seems like a good place to start. Once the mod is complete I will post results.

It's yellow pine, very native to the Carolinas on the
US mid Atlantic coast. I suspect that "Carolena" is
an invented name, derived from "Carolina" as some
kinda euphemism for just saying "Pine" which most
instrument buyers would hear as kinda cheezy altho
thaz really toadally unfounded.

If you're not too thrilled with what your preamp is doing output-wise, consider an Aguilar preamp. I have an OBP-3 in my Thumb NT, and it can really, really bring the cheese.

Funny stuff! Thanks guys for the input. The passive pickups are starting to grow on me, thus holding off on the preamp for now. Beginning to like the sound of the tone knob after all. The tone knob has a subtle impact on the overall sound/clarity but actually quite nice.
