my berhinger amp sux, wats good for phat tone and warwick growl but versatile with compressor and all that kinda jazz. also (im thinking bout a warwick rig)

also prices (in australian dollar if possible) i dont want it to eat a hole in my wallet either

if anyone has good links or is selling themselves, let me know

these are good deals from the guys at bass centre in Melbourne, i have deal 2 with the 5.1 and the 411. the only thing is the compresser is not that great.
 
X-TREME. Even the 5.1 has the muscle of a Spartan. It has a good compressor built in and it's adjustable. It is an amp worth considering.
 
I made a post about my interest of a rig a couple of weeks ago. Originally about ProFet 3.2, WCA Pro 211 and 115 cabs.
First I was told that I should go for the 5.1 with the cabs. But I'd wait for summer for the new model to arrive.
Now I'm starting to think about a Xtreme 5.1. Mr. Stroud has the 211 and 115s with two xtreme heads. (Oh, and a couple of 411s, I think :P)
He says that those cabs fills in eachother holes, and are very versatile.
And with the Xtreme, it is more then enough power.
I'm strongly considering the Xtreme and the cabs now, but my best advice is to try them. Your local guitar centre should be able to bring it in, and just send it back if you don't want it.

this is a review/guide i wrote ages ago. should give you an idea on all the features


Voicing section;

the bottom is a low cut filter. the more you turn it, the higher the cut off point becomes, ie, the more low end frequencies are removed. i think it sweeps up to about 70hz

the growl is centred on 220hz (from memory that is, i might be wrong) so that gives quite a "deep" growl. definatly sounds nice when boosted, even if it isnt the "harshest" growly frequency

i cant remember what frequency the contour effects (it is something like a boost on 100hz, a cut at 300hz and a boost at 15khz when turned to the right) but it is powerful. it adds a lot of lows and highs so can give a very big variety of sounds. i tend to use it when i want a really harsh "metallic" sound when im doing something that needs a very harsh percussive sound for fingerstyle

the attack is centred on 1.1khz (from memory again). great to add a bit of articulation and "zing" to the tone.

in the EQ i think its;

bass - 80hz
middle - swept 250hz to 7khz
hi - 9 khz

i disagree with oli about what the balance knob does. i've hardly ever used it but im sure its a gain adjustment so you can adjust the volume of the EQed signal to compensate for volume loss/gain due to the frequency changes


the great thing about the x-treme is it has soo many feature but actually does them all really well. the comp works really well and if you use the comp LED with the gain you can actuallly adjust the threashold in affect (along with the ratio which is what the comp pot adjusts). all in all the comp is fantastic, and relativly transparent.

the settings for the comp is also a cool feature. you can set the comp to on permenantly, off, or on when the EQ is turned on. the comp will however always turn on when the boost is acctivated.

the boost is cool although i dont use it much but it does give you two settings (2db and 6db) which is thoughtful

the boost and EQ can both be switched with a foot switch (needs to be latching and used with a balanced cable).

the actual build quality is excelent. the pots all feel well made and have enough resistance to stop careless tweaking. if they do ever become loose they can be tightened with a small allen key.

the tuner out is a nice feature. i just use it with my cheap tuner that i tape to my rack. it would have ben nice if warwick had given another footswitch function for the mute (the tuner works when the amp is muted) but my thumb stays in tune perfectly so i never need to tune mid-gig so this isnt really a problem for me.

there is the effects loop with the blend. the blend is a common feature these days, but that said in my opinion is a vital feature. i usually keep the blend at 25% wet when i do use some effects, leaves most of the warwick tone unaffected

the line out is useful if your running any other amps but you need to keep in mind that the line out is post everything (so post gain/EQ/loop and master). because of this if you do run the x-treme with another amp you wont have two fully inderpenndent rigs. the second amp will be working as a slave (basically set the gain and master to a suitable value on the slave and use the x-tremes master is the "overall master volume")

the DI is a common thing that people dont agree on (in terms of how good it is) but in my opinion it works fine, plenty good enough for gigging.


in live use...

at most gigs i preform at i use my setup and let all other bass players use it (my bit of advertisment for warwick) and one really noticable thing is how good the voicing section is. when a bass players tells me what he wants, a few tweaks with the voicing knobs and they're generally happy, so the EQ is still left unused and can be used for other functions.

the cooling system is very good, and still remains cool after several hours of hard gigging at high volume (my current compressor runs hotter ). because of this the unit can be closly racked without worries of it heating other units up.

finally...its loud. i currently use a pair of inderpendent x-treme 5.1stacks (i split the signal before the amp instead of using the line out). however just using the one 5.1 is loud. at a typical loud gig on a nice sized stage, the amp is usually a good 6/7/8 meters away from me and would typically be on about 12 (sometimes under but never above) and i can hear and feel fantastically well.

thats alot of techincal terms, now i gotta learn what all that means :lol: thanx alex, il have 2 go try the x treme out for myself now
