How do I go about waxing my bass?

When waxing do I first apply with my hand and then let it dry? After drying, buff it out with a soft rag? Also, how many times should I wax it in a row?

Hello Derek,

The process is farily easy. Apply the wax with a clean cloth, let stand for a few minutes and then buff off with another clean cloth. You only need to Wax the body and the neck (If your bass has a color finish, DO NOT WAX), and try to always wax following the grain of the wood.
 
are you sure that i also have to wax the neck? i probably also have to wax the neck even if i have a coloured oil finish bass right? :?
 
I have a coloured oil finish bass and I wax the back of the neck (but obviously not the body). This is optional - I think it depends how the neck feels to you - seen lots of different opinions on this one

I wax the back of the nexk too.

I got the impression that the neck shouldnt be greased.

Very often, the back of the neck gets enough grease from your hands. If for any reason, you feel the wood is drying out and it doesn't feel comfortable to you, I'd suggest you wax the back of the neck without any worries. The important thing here is make sure that the wood is getting enough moisture from wither the wax or your hands.

If you feel the wood is moist enough and that you don't need to wax it, then don't. But if you feel it's dry, then go ahead and wax the back of the neck with no worries.

But... is it bad to wax the fretboard?! For instance, I've read somewhere on the forum that 'lemon oil' darkens the wood, so... I think it would be nice if we apply that oil on the fretboard. I don't know, just guessing...!!!?
 
Well, yes, Lemon Oil darkens the wood over time. But it is not intended to be used as often as the wax. every 6 months or so for the Lemon Oil is ok.
 
Do you have to get the strings removed to apply Lemon Oil on the fretboard ?
 
I always used to use Lemon Oil on my fingerboards, until I came across this passage posted by luthier Roger Sadowsky back in 1996 on The Bottom Line:

"I have always found lemon oil (as in
Old English) to make boards dry out faster than if left alone. After
24 years of this, I still like linseed oil the best. "
