Honestly, What Would You Have Done...

I went grocery shopping this evening and when I went to checkout lights were on, on two of the tweleve or so registers, the first was the express lane and I had more than 10 items, plus there was no cashier there so I walked down to the other light, and again no cashier. I could see the cashiers were over by the office door checking out something on the employee bulletin board, so I figured no biggie and started unloading my cart on to the checkstand when I noticed the drawer of the register was standing wide open. The spaces closest to me was the $20s and it was pretty full. I looked over and the cashiers were still looking the other way. Now I have to admit, times are pretty hard for me right now and it sure was tempting.

So I quickly reached across the counter and grabbed about half the $20s and about the same amount of $10s. I didn't want it to look too obvious when the cashier came back. Anyway I finished unloading my cart and by then the cashier had noticed me standing there and came walking over. Trying to play it cool, I said, "Leaving drawer open probably isn't the smartest move." He walked over, saw the drawer open pushed it shut and made some stupid comment about "I wonder how that happened." I thought to myself, you left it open you moron, but didn't voice my thought. Anyway he rings up my purchases, I give him the money, he opens the drawer, he puts the money in and gives me my change, and I leave. This moron never even seemed to notice that his drawer was alot less full than it had been.

Ok, I didn't really take any money. When I noticed the drawer open I called out to the cashier. His name is Dennis and I can't satnd him, he's a bit of a jerk. so anyway, I call out and get his attention and then in a voice loud enough to make sure the other cashier heard it, I said, "Hey do you really think leaving you cash drawer open while you away from the stand is a smart thing to do". He came rushing over and made a stupid excuse that it must have popped open all by itself.

As I said, I didn't take anything, but man it sure was tempting and I could have easily gotten away with it. I guess I am just to honest. So, what would you have done?
 
I'd have to stand next to ya buddy. To honest to have done it.

However, I'm not above busting the guy's balls about leaving it
open either. :P

Who you are as a person is often defined by what you do when nobody is looking.

You did the right thing.
 
Wow, cool, thank you, I hadn't looked at it that way. Wow, I guess there's hope for me after all.

Seriously, the way you put it actually just gave me an ego boost. Thanks, I needed that.
 
I would have got naked, blocked the grocery conveyer belt sensor so it kept running,
took a dump on the belt, grab the register and my groceries and ran. Then when I got
to the door I would play a couple games of that cool "claw for a worthless stuffed
animal" game, dropped off my groceries and register just inside the door, and then I
would have gone and done snow angels in front of one of the security cameras outside
(I would still be naked). Then I would just walk off with nothing. The shock from that
scene alone would make them remember to watch their registers.

Then I would have come back the next night naked and covered in banana peels with a
chainsaw and would take that register back.

thndrstk6, why do you always have to be so NORMAL. come on, make an effort, try something odd next time, otherwise life is boring :-)
you can't always do what 98% of the people would do, goddamn, there must be originality !
 
Ok... hmmm... then I would close the register myself and not say anything to the cashier
so that he wouldn't suffer any embarrassment. I would walk away with a satisfied smile
on my face knowing that Jesus was giving me a nudge on the chin for a job well done.

I'd call out and complain about the fact NO ONE was on checkout, and mention the fact its open, its horrendously bad practice and the guy should have been warned/fired imo.

Taking the cash probably wouldn't have crossed my mind, its just not something i'd even contemplate.
 
I'm usually a person who realizes I missed an opportunity only by the whooshing sound they make when they pass by. Had a friend call me and say he found some old guitar when he was moving, used to be his girlfriends' fathers or something, asked if I wanted it. He said it was "really old," her father used to play in the 60's, but he figured I could get like $200 for it maybe or just keep it to play with.

I asked about the brand.

"Oh, I don't know guitars, I think it says something Paul on the top."
"Dude, if that's a 60's Les Paul, that's worth possibly thousands of dollars."
"Oh, wow, really? Hell I guess I'll keep it then."

Then I hung up to go sit in the corner by myself for a while and figure out if I did the right thing.


Of course all people aren't so good, I worked as a cashier at this little shop where if I came up short at the end of the day it came out of my pocket. This guy had like a $5 breakfast, paid with a $100. I accidentally handed him an extra $20 and he counted it in front of me then ran out the door before I could say anything.


You did the right thing.
 
I think you did the right thing too Randy.Even if the staff missed you stealing the money,the till would've been short & the camera footage would've showed why.
 
I didn't even think of cameras, but now that you mention it, I know for a fact they don't have any. Well, only one in the office on the safe.

I never actually thought of taking the money. It wasn't til I got home before it struck me how easy it would have been. I just thought I would post it here to give everyone a chance to ask themselves the question, would they have done it.

But I really did like DFinch's comment about telling a mans character by his actions when no one is looking. That one really made me think and actually made me feell good about myself. But in the end, someone is always watching what I do, Me.
 
That is a good point. There are some things you do when nobody is looking...and it's probably better that nobody is looking. :P
 
I wouldn't even have considered taking any dough - honestly. I guess I would have just waited for him to come back. He would have realised the till was open when he got back.

You not taking the dough is a little hard for me to believe. I figured if nothing else you would take the dough and make a nice pastry out of it.

But while I don't think you would be able to resist the dough, fear not my friend, I know you would never have taken the money. lol
 
I think you did the right thing.Even if you didn't get caught the clerk might have to make up the short out of his own pocket.
 
I'd have likely cleaned out the till, called the person over and watch his face when he realized all the money was missing. Then handed it back.

I did something similar while I was on nursing consolidation. The nurses on the floor had the habit of saving all their wastes (controlled drug ampules almost full) in a cup then signing each other off at the end of the shift. Generally it was morphine. 1 night I took all the wastes and drew up 10cc of 10mg/cc morphine, and left the empty ampules on the table. My preceptor and I put the 100mg morphine filled syringe in the lock box in the med cabinet. We chose this night because she had the key to the lock box. BTW, anyone had access to syringes and the morphine. The med area wasn't locked nor monitored. You shoulda seen the faces of the nurses when they went to do their wastes and found 100mg of morphine missing. And no witnesses. All signed out under their names.
 
i would like to say i wouldnt of taken it but times are tuff and i no deep down i would of taken it sorry to say
 
I once stole a packet of biscuits and thats been about it.

me and my friend ahd been to a 2 day gig, and camped, and we had basically spent all our money on crap(Drink, Disposiable cameras etc) we were just starvin, and this was the third day as it ended late on the 2nd day, so we had stayed, i juyst walked into a petrol station, looked around and then picked up a packet of cookies and walked out, nothing happened. I feel it was nessicary me and my friend were farely boredering on i dont know what.

I wouldnt steal in normal situations, and its good of you with all of your troubles and what not, to not have.
