Hidden NT masking strip.

I just checked photos on the site. I had a really hard time finding the strip on photos. It's more visible on Thumb NT and Dolphin, almost not seen on SSII (well, I saw the upper joint, but still not sure if the lower joint is visible or not :lol:) and I swear there is none on the Infinity. Probably there really isn't one since it has a top wood different from the body wood. Am I right?
 
Think of the top starting out as being a single piece.Then it's cut into 3 pieces.One right wing,one left wing & a narrower centre piece.Then all 3 pieces are glued onto the back,with the narrower piece covering the neck.It matches because it was originally a single slab of wood.

Greg, which bass are you referring to?
 
Greg'z right. All the basses with hidden NT have 3 pieces.
 
I don't know about this, but you can see here (rocket music owner old thumb), that the 3 pieces do not fit that well (the wood is ♣♣♣♣ing awesome tho)

So... Infinity has a bookmatched top? Yes, that's clearly seen, but your logic made me doubt.
What's my point: an "exposed" NT body consists of neck and two body wings, a hidden NT is actually no different, it just has the neck hidden under a narrow strip of matching wood, but basses with a pretty top are different, since the top covers the neck-to-wing joints. Isn't it?

I think about it some more and really doubt that's the way it goes. The wing need to be much thicker than the masking centre piece (half to 1/3). It would be a waste to just throw away what is just cut out from the centre piece. Besides, my two SS2 and Pro1 do not have matching centre with the wings.

What would be really cool is to have it done via the old Warwick SN; with the neck set into a routing the entire length on the back of the (one piece?) body

Again, that is a question for Warwick to answer about how they want to "define" Hidden NT from their line-up. To me, Hidden means you can't see, plain and simple.

On ALL my NTs and I have some:-) the 3 parts are not from the same piece.

so I think they are just mixing up the pieces - who cares:-)

On my Thumb, there are 3 pieces too, however, they come from the same piece (before it was cut in three). It's pretty obvious on the first photo :

Well, yeah, hidden means you can't see. And it is done using 3 pieces, 2 wings, and one central piece to mask the neck. Except the infinity of course which is a different design.
 
Maybe not every single hidden nt bass is 3 pieces from the same piece of wood.But the fact of the matter is,there are 2 wings & 1 centre masking strip to hide the neck.
You can analyse it anyway you like,doubt it because you feel it's too wastful,but it's a fact that anything made from wood,produces waste,or "offcuts".I cant find the pic right now,but there was a Streamer made entirely from small offcuts,glued together in a diagonal pattern,out of something like 156 separate pieces.Just goes to show you not everything is wasted.Some of the waste even goes into heating the factory,benches & flooring.
