Hi from a newbie with some questions

Hi,

I've been playing a Warwick Thumb 5 thru for the past 12 years and I absolutely love it, it's the best bass I've ever played, and it just get's better with age :)

Anyway, I've recently changed my home studio to PC based and I've got a whole load of outboard gear that I've had lying around too long, that I've decided to get rid of. And I've decided to buy another Warwick with the proceeds.

I've always fancied a Streamer Stage 1 5 string as a second bass, I'd also like a fretless but I won't play that much so can't justify spending Warwick money on it.

I'm going to have about £900 to play with. Will this get me a decent Streamer and what are your thoughts on the Rockbass for a fretless 4 or 5 string? Are they any good?

Hi Mart,

Also a Trace Elliot man I see. I'm still using my 12 year old AH300 with 4 x10

Such a shame they let the quality drop on the later kit, mine's been rock solid and sounds great :)
 
:D Yup...on my 3rd GP7 15'' Combo (pre Gibson) now and they've all been good. Every so often I try out an Ampeg or G-K but can't see the point of changing (not so sure about the new T-E stuff tho' so need to -think about it next year when swap-out time comes). It fits in the boot (trunk for you Americans) of a Celica and has good spring loaded handles so you don't break your back.

Hi Bassoctopus!

I've always claimed that Rockbasses are damned good value for money - my Corvette fretless Rockbass is a gem (for the money) - but my Corvette $$ just blows it away. Not sure if your £900 budget is for the fretless, or if you just want a good value fretless for occasional use.

I've written this before - the rockbass is made of alder and maple - same as the US P-bass I used to own. The P-bass cost twice as much, and I wouldn't swap it back for the Rockbass!

I have about £900 total budget. I want a Streamer S1 5 string and if possible a fretless. I realise that I'm unlikely to get both for my budget, unless I get lucky and someone wants to do a deal.

Fretless would be a toy rather than a proper instrument for me, so I'd probably not want to spend more than a couple of hundred on it.
 
Yo Steve,pardon the change of subject but have you seen the league of gentlemen?Mate that show cracked me up something shockin.I can't remember the gutarists name,the glam rocker from Creme Brule.Do you know it?

Anyway... I had to stop watching "League of Gentlemen" - Royston Vasey was too much like the village where I live and it was really freaking me out! Some bugger even changed the road sign on the way in!

You should consider the difference of string spacing between a thumb and a stage 1.They are quite different ( 16.5 mm for the thumb and 20 mm for the stage 1).
You could have problem switching one bass to the other.

I didn't realise that. Does that apply to the early basses or just the new ones?

Looks like I'm going to have to go and play one before purchase.

Is it true that the SSII 5-string has a string spacing of 18 mms? I've heared this before and wasn't really sure. Maybe that's why it's the only 5-string I liked playing... it'll definitely be my next custom shop, for sure.
 
Looks like I'll need a Stage II then. I love the string spacing on the Thumb 5, keeps the neck nice and manageable.

Does this mean that I won't be able to get a bass that shows the thru neck at the front :( :cry:
 
Really? It felt so different and comfortable. Oh well, I guess it's just right for me then.

Yes.. someone changed the road sign for a while (welcome to Royston Vasey, you'll never leave). We don't have that shop - but we do have an original set of stocks (although not currently used for punishing malfeasants), a plague pit, a sandwich shop that closes at lunchtime (?) and we still celebrate pagan festivals! The indigenous population is so inbred that if one person stubs his toe... everybody limps!

The last bit was an exaggeration... the rest wasn't... We do have some absolutely stunning scenery though (when it's not raining) :wink:
