Recently I've doing some setup in my rockbass (corvette basic), and now I have some questions, that maybe you can help me with.
Firstly, my background: I'm not a professional musician, in fact, I never took any class (shame on me, I know, but I haven't found much time on my schedule for that... hopefully in future). So everything I know - wich is very little, is knowledge gathered through friends (also amateurs) and self-taught by internet.
So, to the bass setup questions:
1. Neck relief: I press the 1st and 20th fret, and check the gap in the middle, on E string. The string should be very close to the fret, but not touch it. Is that right? Some pepole mentioned this gap should be a few milimeters, but since this measure wont be very precise (I have both hands fretting the string, the E string is quite thick, etc) I'm doing this "by eye". Is this aproach ok?
2. Intonation / action: I'm in a loophole here, and probably I'm doing something (everything?) wrong:
- setup just-a-nut so the string doesn't buzz, when played open.
- setup action so the string doesn' buzz on middle and upper frets.
- check intonation and set it acordingly
- setup action again, since string length changed
- check intionation. Not quite right, since I changed action
Well, I get the feeling that I can go on this forever... Please what's wrong here? BTW, I do tune the string between each step.
3. After setting up everything (neck relief, action, intonation, tunning) if I let the bass rest for a couple days, and after that I verify that it needs tunning again It means that the instrument ins "unbalanced", and the setup was wrong afterall?
