Help with changing preamp and pots in a 2002 Streamer LX

Hi, am thinking about replacing my current MEC preamp with probably a Bartolini or Glockenklang preamp, but I need a little advice before I do anything. I still plan on using my active MEC pick ups in this new configuration though.

However, I noticed that my current MEC volume knob is rated at 500K ohms. I find that's a bit odd as I thought active pick ups could not work with such high impedance pots. I read that they only work with lower impedance ones, such as 25k. I'm just wondering if I install a non-MEC preamp, would that mean I'll have to change the pot to 25k or leave it at 500k?

Also, my current MEC volume knob pops every time i switch it from active to passive. Does this mean the pot is busted or does it need a clean up?

Appreciate any help on the issues above.

Welcome to the forum!

The preamps don't come with pots already wired? You better buy the whole thing, and say to them you are using on a bass with active pickups.

The pot popping is not normal. No matter what we discuss here, asking advice for a pro is always a good idea, and usually saves you from spending more money...

+1 Bart and Glock EQ come as a harness (pre-wired including pots)
You have to find other knobs though

The 500k pot is the output volume control and the balance control is ineffect two 25kvolume controls for the active pups.If you install a new preamp,connect it where the MEC preamp is and I don't think you will have a problem.There are several treads regarding changing preamps on the forum,do a search and I'm sure it will be of help.

Verb, just to clarify that I can install in any preamp with the existing MEC pots in place? You also mentioned that 500k pot is the output volume control - I'm just curious what would happen if I replaced that 500k pot with a lower impedance one, such as 250K or 25k. Has anyone tried that?

Sorry I wasn't totally clear in my previous post,afaik you can use the stock balance and master volume pots but will need to use the pots supplied with your new EQ,unless the MEC pots are the same rating.Also your EQ will need to be ok for use with active pickups due to the stronger signal strength over passive pickups.
I dont know what the result of changing the master volume control rating would be.
