Help me with my school project!!!!

Since we are studying sound in my physics class my teacher gave us the assignment to build an instrument... So I decided, sure ill build a bass, i might as well its all i can play. So I come to you guys with the question of, how can i do this!!! He said i can use anything and it is due in a little under two weeks. Doesnt have to be electric, so i just need some help with design and materials...

two weeks is a damn short time to build smth of this calibre.

i've never done something like this but i can see that the neck's gonna be a big problem. it will be extremely difficult to do accurately and fitting in the truss rod requires immense skill.

maybe you could go around guitar builders forums and look around. i'm sure there are some of them around.

it doesnt have to be anything to complex, its just a high school class, i just figured you guys could help me get the basics down
 
if it need to be in after two weeks i wouldnt bother with the truss rod...

If I don't make it to Berklee im thinking of builidng electric basses and becoming a luthier. I might suggest that you start with a "Washtub" bass. Dig around, you'll find somthing on them.

I've estimated that for a Warwick quality insturemnt that the material cost will be around 1000 US Dollars. Good luck!

microphones, a stick, some cardboards, voila!

I'm sure you could build a contraptions out an aluminum girder, some nylon strings, a mic, clamps to fix up a bridge and tuning keys. Might not be very safe though :)
 
you should keep things simple and build a whamola bass like this one here used by a mr. claypool:



it seems a lot easier than a full guitar. i mean it's a single string on a fretless fretboard. some goofy pully/lever thing at one end and a single P pickup and output at the other. looks fun to play too. (i wish i had one to play around on)
 
scroll to the bottom of the page & you'll find instructions on how to build a washtub bass. :wink:
