Hellborg Preamp questions....

So I have a warwick hellborg preamp - sounds amazing - except live it seems.. a wee bit too polite - the warmth that I love when it's just me playing means it doesn't seem to cut through the mix. I'm using it into a ACME B2 cab.


It's been up for sale for a while with no interest so thinking of keeping it and trying to make it work.... any possible solutions? do I need a compressor in there, more aggressive Eq settings? different cab?
How do you use yours?

is it really why the audience hears or it is what you feel on stage?
Because I tell you brother, when I test a preamp I go in front and plug it directly in the console. I cannot play other preamp, because Hellborg is a monster compared to anything I tried.
For Cargo I also bought an EL Distressor, it is a great compressor, and it has those lovely distortion modes.

I guess my story is I had a tecamp rig, great amp- not so great cab.
Well plugged into a HK DART monitor somewhere we were practicing and was amazed and the clean pure bass tone I got as opposed to what I was getting through my rig.

Well picked up a Roland D-bass210 combo - which is a great bit of kit and closer to what I was looking for - then got the hellborg in a trade for the tecamp head. The hellborg into the roland was great sounding (but not that much power)

Then got the ACME B2 (and a ashdown power amp) and... it just seems too clean and polite.
Through the PA of course is the real test - and one of the places I play has just gone all IEM so can hear really really well what it sounds like... and it's great - but so rich sounding that I don't seem to get much middy punch.

what kinda Eq settings do you use on yours florin?
 
Oh, don't ask, I am still tweaking the buttons after I switched to da Fortress :-) With the LX I used to slight boost 300 Hz, and 3k, and leave everything flat. With the fortress I just boost some 3K, and maybe cut some 800. But nothing much...
 
cheers florin - even though it doesn't seem it it is useful to hear how folk are using theres!
 
What I like about this pre is that almost any settings are useful, so it is only a matter of taste :-)
