I have a question regarding the Hellborg Preamp...I normally use a Monster 1/4" TS > 1/4" TS instrument cable. Looking at different video clips (i.e. Andy Irvine) it appears that some players use XLR at the Pre and go direct to ??? (1/4" TRS?) into the bass?

The Hellborg manual says...

"Input Jack: This Neutrick Combo Connector provides an unbalanced 1/4" and balanced XLR input. The 1/4" jack is used for all normal basses. The balanced XLR input is for instruments with balanced outputs."

I assume that I have "normal" wired basses...so I'm not sure what would be different about the Wicks I see using XLR at the Preamp, compared to mine? Maybe they are the same, and I'm just misinterpreting the HB manual?

Using the Hi-Z 1/4" has been fine, but would using the Low-Z XLR provide an even cleaner sound?

Still learning about bass wiring/cabling, so any help to clarify this is much appreciated :-)

iirc the Low-Z XLR is for basses like the series 2 Alembic so you dont need to use the Alembic power supply. Now I might be completely wrong about all, or part of my answer, but using the Hi-Z 1/4 input is fine for your basses & I dont think it'd be possible to get a cleaner sound with the amp setup you have.
Cheers & PS, I LOVE your set up.

Thanks, Greg!...I've enjoyed reading/learning from your posts over the years. Glad you're back om here more often :-)
