when did Warwick start using the quick release cavity covers??

My 90 SSI has the old style, but trujo777's 90 thumb has a new one.

am I correct to assume the change took place sometime that year??

His is like a hybrid, with the new cavity cover, but still with the separate battery compartment...

You're right 1990 was pretty much the transition year for the covers. I don't 'think' you could narrow it down to a month when they did the actual change as it was probably a gradual one but to try an narrow it down here are the basses I own from 1990...

June '90 - SSI - Screw in control compartment and separate clip in battery compartment
Oct '90 - Streamer Ltd - Clip in control compartment and separate clip in battery compartment
Nov '90 - SSI - Clip in control compartment and separate clip in battery compartment
 
Hey naetog,

The 'quick release' cavity cover was introduced in the second half of 1990. My fretless Thumb, which was made in Jan. of that year, has the old screw on type, but my fretted Thumb from Dec. of '90 has the quick release type. As for the seperate battery compartment, which I feel was a superior design, that went away early in 1991, pretty much by like Mar. of that year.

I neglected to mention the tuners in my original post, but after seeing your gorgeous SSI5 in the Streamer Club thread it reminded me. 1990 was also the transition year for those as well. They changed from the Schallers to the Gotohs in the second half of that year, same as the snap-in control cavity cover. I'm guessing your SSI is a Jan - say July made bass. Like the screw on cover and seperate battery box, I like the older, Schaller design better. Purely for the look of them, as both kinds function very well.

Just some more useless knowledge I guess...... :)
