I really love playing with competent soloists. I feel its then that the bass really shines and lets you just feel the groove, the melodies and just enjoy the moment you can chug the e string playing 8th notes and its just seems more magical slide up and play a note an octave higher, and you can feel the added impact you give the solo - i honestly play bass for those moments! - If you fall apart then no matter how kick ass the solo was it just isn't the same in my experience!
As for bass solos, I've only ever played one, and it'll be my last for a while imo it really didn't suit my playing and how i'd like to be perceived as a player, but thats me. I love listening to them though, and learning them for my own playing pleasure!
