Greetings from Austin, TX - US and two questions.

I'm spoiled. Very spoiled and fortunate. I have been playing keys for the past 20 years either for a living or for pleasure, and usually both at the same time.
About 6 months ago at my church, I got between a rock and a hard place for a kids worship event with a guitar player and a drummer, but no bass player.
Bass on keys is unacceptable for what we were playing. A friend of mine loaned me her bass. Cheap Washburn. I had 2 weeks to get 4 songs down well enough to lead them vocally. I took it home with a SWR10 practice amp. I could not put the thing down!
It was so much fun to pick up a new instrument and learn something totally out of your comfort zone.
I gave the wife the bad news: I must own a bass. I must take lessons!
I know a few good bass players who gave me some tips on what to look for. None of them suggested any particular model, but being a quality freek, I wasn't going to buy a Mexican P or J. It had to be American.

That's when I walked into Guitar Center and saw this Warwick Corvette standard 5. The bass tech there showed me a few different models and then show this one to me. He said with the Warwicks, I could go straight to the house with a DI and it would sound great. I could not put that thing down. It sounds incredible. It's so smooth and yet it can get just funky as you want.
I own this bass as of today! I don't deserve it, but I have it!

Questions:

1. Should I just plug into a decent DI for now or should I get one of those Tech 21 preamps. (Head and cabinet in the future. Letting the wife settle down first :) )
2. I'm looking for the security lock system in the bag and I don't see it. Should I? Or is that a separate purchase?

1. Plugging into a "decent DI" is certainly an option, but I'd recommend either the (Tech 21) SansAmp or the MXR M-80. It will give you greater control over what you send to the PA.

2. GC is famous for taking parts (like straplocks) from a new bass to give to a customer who has lost them, and then not replacing them. They should be able and willing to take care of it if you ask...

Actually, I found the strap locks in the same pouch with the wax.
Thanks for the suggestions. Of course, right now, I don't know if I can even get away with $100+ purchases yet. :)

We ran the bass through a DI box at our church for quite a while, the congregation didn't know the difference :wink: After a bit we picked up a little SWR WM10, it has a post preamp DI on it which sounds a lot better through the house and acts as a great monitor. I would save up my pennies for a similar arrangement. BTW at the volumes that we play at church, my Thumb sounds great through this set up. (Of course a Warwick would sound good through a string and tin can).....

The security locks should have come with your bass. Please contact GC and inquire about getting them back.

I found the Aphex bass exciter is a great pedal, and you can also use it as a DI - if you try a few preamps/DIs out, put it on your list

If you want something cheap, versatile and good-sounding, check out the HARTKE VXL Bass Attack. 8)
 
I would recomend either the Ampeg tube DI box if you want the basic warm with little hassle or the aguilar DI with active EQ for a bit more control. both have a good tone which doesn't sheld the growl of the warwick.

Building a nice DI box yourself is not that hard really and you get to decide the quality of the components your pur inside it, for a really cheap price.
