Gig with Jaco's drummer!

I just got back from a gig I had with Jaco's drummer, Adam Nussbaum. Adam played with Gil Evans, and Jaco would sit in a lot. Adam also recorded with Jaco on the live album "Live in New York City, Vol. 5: Raca."

It was incredible. He's one of the best drummers I have played with. We talked about what it was like to play with Jaco. It was a great gig.

You know, i have heard so many things about Jaco being arrogant and everything. Victor Wooten said that when Jaco was asked "wheres the future of bass going?" he said "well, i'm getting on a plane tomorrow..."

Adam said that Jaco was an insanely nice guy. He always helped out his band mates, and was always up for playing new things. They played some old motown stuff. He said that Jaco had the right idea about what makes a good bassist. Hold down the groove first, then add flash. All communication. They would come up with most of their ideas from eye contact...as all good ensemble players do.

It was so much fun playing with this guy. He was a little harsh during sound check...even my guitarist told me "that was rude...but dont let that get to you." Anyway, he was the best drummer to play off of. We played bossa, blues, swing, a ballad...everything! It was so much fun.

He told me that he liked my tone, feel, lines, and that i could keep a groove. Coming from someone who has played with people like Jaco and Pat Metheny, that really meant a lot.

Pays being a jazz major...my teacher introduces me to some pretty stellar players

well done man, not being a fan of Jaco, any bassist that can "Lock in" with a good drummer is always No1 priority. Good drummer/bass combos are hard to come by. If the drummer said that to you, he must have liked what you were playing!!

Jaco always had a bit too much "Flash" for my ears!

That is awesome! I heard him with Steve Swallow and David Liebman last summer and he absolutely killed the drums!
