From metal to rap?!

I've been asked to do some studio work... One of my neighbors is a rapper and just asked me if I could help him with a song, He gave me a demo cd and wants me to do a funky bass line for it... I can't stand rap, But I happen to love the drum and bass on it :D

Anyways, The song I'm working on is VERY funky :D A bit of guitar with alot of wah, I find myself using Ryan Martinies method of playing tapping octaves and it sounds pretty funky :D

It's weird how all of a sudden just over the past month in a half everything has been going crazy for me (in a good way) With all the shows coming up, people asking me left and right to join theyre bands, this little bit of studio work coming up... And the big show next year... I think I have become addicted to the life of a musician.

Not to mention I now have a kick ass fullstack :D
 
Being in a band is kinda like girlfriends. When you have one, others are more interested. When you don't, you seem desperate.

I dunno, something like that... :lol:

Ya, I noticed that :P

I figure I'll help out the people on the side a bit as long as it doesn't cut into my bands time...
 
cool! studio work is a lot more "bread and butter" than a band... Less glamourous, but it has a better chance of paying the bills at the end of the month...
 
Be interested to know how you get on... personally I absolutely hate working in a studio... long periods of boredom interspersed with moments of complete fear and panic (just wait until that red light comes on)!

I've left bands in the past because they only want to record and not play live! (in my sax playing days)... but don't take any notice of what I say!

Rap sounds good... very rhythmically based (bassed?)... and sounds like the guy will want you to come up with your own ideas... which is even better. Personally I believe you can't play too many different styles, it all makes you better as a musician.

... and the girlfriend analogy... too true... it's surprising how many people see you when you're on the music scene, and word spreads... you'll be known as "that guy with the Warwick who does the tapping!"

Exlore as much as you can, some paths will lead to another. Be a "Yes"-person, and more opportunities will come. :lol: People won`t be afraid of asking you for a collaboration if you seem open-minded and willing.
 
Studio work for rap "producers" has been my bread and butter for a loooooooong time.

I find it fun, It probably helps that I don't really mind rap..

I actually do a live show with a group, they are not the "gangster" rap, it's actaully quite catchy and I get to use alot of different techniques that I wouldn't if I was in any other different styles. Not, to mention when we play live there are always tons of drunk ladies around, they have quite a following.. :shock:
 
So I finished a few songs for them a little while ago and it went pretty good, I originally was only going to do 1 song but the singer was late so I ended up doing a few things on the spot without even listening to them before :P

I did a bit of slap bass, A bit of finger style and even some tapping... All in all it went pretty good and my Warwick / Markbass sounded awesome :D
