I just received a 1999 FNA and would like some input. I downloaded the manual and have a jist for all the controls, but have a few questions.

1. Mine appears to have the Seymore Duncan PA (pre-amp) as it switched to a tone contour since the preamp still is controlable and the lows are boosted aas well as highs. This occurs when pulled out.

What else should I know about this option? I tried no batt and noticed it wouldn't work so put one in and it did. Tried a dead 4 volt (9v) and worked fine.

2. Do I need to run a higher voltage to get better tone? I couldn't tell a difference from a new batt to the 4 volt old one.

3. There is no true passive correct?

4. Any harm to PA running low voltage?

5. Any suggestions for favorite PA settings?

Oh yeah, why the hell did Warwick switch the necks on these things in 2000ish cause mine has the old style and it is so NICEEEEEEE!!!!! Now I want to sell my proline and thumb and find older ones with the slimmer neck.

Erm... Reading either the forum or the website would have tell you that since two years, the slim neck is back...

also, the preamp is velcro attached to the electroninc underneath or whatever it is. Is that how Warwick did it back then or has someone modified it?

Thx and I was aware of that, but was wondering why they changed but I'm sure that is on here somewhere I can dig up. Thanks again for the link Alex.

Not sure at 100% though, I'll investigate. Might have to do with people complaining the neck was too slim :-) Changing it back to slimmer neck was one of my first job here :-)

So how about the Preamp questions for the JAzzman my fellow WW peeps?

Hey, since you were directly involved... How does the new neck compare with the old pre-2000 necks? Is it nearly the same? I am guessing more handwork went to the old necks so there should be differences even between these old ones.

The newer neck is slimmer than the pre 2000. BTW, when we changed to slimmer necks, people started complaining that this is not Warwick anymore :-))

Not exactly. But the fact that people complained about neck changes is indeed accurate (and highly annoying) :-)

Then maybe it is a different profile. They feel slimmer :-)

BTW, the 4 strings neck of the korean ones is different? It seems very tiny, Jazzbassish.

So which neck is the best, then? :-)

It is a good example of "feels" or "seems" or "perception" is not good to compare necks, because they don't give accurate measurements. The necks are, indeed, the same. Same JAN, same bridge than the german, which means same neck width. They cannot be thinner than the german ones, and the profile cannot really be "narrower" than the german ones. I mean they physically CANNOT, due to construction. And they use my drawings and dimensions :-)

Slight variations may occurs due to material and manufacturing, though...

Man this topic got sidetracked to neck profile....should I start another post?

There are several questions about the FNA Jazzman Preamp (S. Duncan) in the post #1.

I was kidding... :-)

I think your answer is in the questions. Ever thought of contacting Seymour Duncan to ask your questions? Nobody will know their products better than them, and they happen to have a website, a forum, and a customer service. I'm quite sure that they'll be as helpful as they can :-)

as you don't have a "passive" switch but a different EQ setting (slap contour), the preamp is always engaged, so it cannot work without a battery.
2. Do I need to run a higher voltage to get better tone? I couldn't tell a difference from a new batt to the 4 volt old one.
With an old battery you have less headroom - more distortion when play louder notes.

3. There is no true passive correct?
Well, you don't have any passive option at all, right?
4. Any harm to PA running low voltage?
Nope...

5. Any suggestions for favorite PA settings?
It is not important OUR settings, but your favourite ones. We can give you some hints for a correct sound :-) You don't have to listen to them.
Do not use the slap contour, haha! Don't boost the lows too much. Don't boost them at all actually :-) Don't cut the mids
You see even if those are good advices, they are good advices for MY sound. The sounds has a lot to do with your technique, and genre... How can we give you tips if we don't know if you play with a pick or fingerstyle, you play near the bridge or the neckside, and what sound are you after. For reggae you need some settings, for nu metal different settings....

Stay away from a boomy sound, and you will be just fine.

Thanks Flo. I new someone would know this stuff!!!! :) I went over to SD but didn't want to have to make up and account and crap since I knew smart peeps like flo would chime in. :) As for settings, this baby is so diverse I just wanted some examples to try out. With the contour and the toggle positions and such there are a lot of possbilities which I LOVE!!!

FYI, I play in a couple cover bands one covering classics, Stones, Petty, Heart, etc, another playing Hair Meatal band stuff, G&R, Motley Crue, Scorps, etc. Play finger style primarily.

`

I had one of them .... and ALL the settings rawk.

Don't ignore the extremes, like playing with just the
bridge PU, single coil [split], with minimal bass EQ
... and then maximum bass boost. Them JazzMans
are a crazy trip, but with no bummers.

If mine had been a 4-string, I'd prolly still have it.
Fortunately for me, a 4-string FNA later came my
way .... but it's an 04LE, so it's different enuf from
yours that my sounds and settings are all different.
It's still a huge and varied tonal pallette but my
regular JazzMan tended toward rather aggressive
sounds, while the LE is more 'sweet'.
